If you had to choose one, would it be clean original sheet metal or matching numbers powertrain?

Metal for sure. Engines expire, get "upgraded" and so forth. Sheet metal is only original once and expensive to replace...

Ask this question in the "what's it worth" section and you'll get a different answer. smirk The "numbers matching" Challenger that was mashed into a ditch certainly comes to mind..........the Mo' Farts really wet themselves over that one. tonguue

Numbers matching/original BODY front to back for this guy.............I could care less what's stamped on that Hemi or Six Pack.

The only one's who care are the car show Nerds who can't afford the hubcaps on your car or know how to change oil, but "numbers matching?" is all their vocabulary can handle. Makes 'em sound like the grand master at a car show though. wink

I'd say from experience that the market generally places more value on excellent body & paint than #s matching.
But there are exceptions, like the rarest #s cars where the body & paint can be redone and the value supports that expense.
Body & paint are much more expensive areas to deal with than assembling a drivetrain, for 90% of the cars made.

I prefer both, but hell, I'd also prefer to have a million bucks in the bank laugh2
(Which I'd probably spend on cars & a bigger shop laugh2)

Numbers matching engine does not matter to me nearly as much as nice metal. It's not that new replacement metal is bad so much as the people applying it don't take the time to get it right so they have to use a lot of filler to cover inadequate workmanship.

Owning numbers matching perfection appears to take some of the fun out of it for cars over and above a certain price point. Occasional burnout? No way! Run it thru the gears? Hellz no!

Haha, I knew someones was going to chime in.

Two schools of thought for me;
Original sheet metal if its a driver!
Matching numbers for the add extra $$ if it a trailer queen.

Luckily for me, I got both worlds when I bought mine.....modified her into a driver.

Sheet metal. As stated previously, engines/trans get swapped; original wheels/hubcaps tossed; factory radios replaced/upgraded.

Tucson AZ,
I almost think that location plays somewhat into this. Out here, the sheet metal is typically not a concern. As a result, I think my preference would be on the numbers matching aspect. Perhaps if I lived in rust country my feelings would be different. Just my two cents.

Seems to me if you don't care about "numbers" then why worry about original sheet metal? I can show you pics of my original sheet metal ... and it ain't pretty !!

I'm sure that the intention was original sheet metal in good condition and not rusted away. laugh2

That made me think of a 70 Barracuda Convertible that a buddy bought years ago.
The guy selling it told him it was "rust free", yeah it was but only because he had cut out all the rust but didn't replace anything that he cut out at all.
Massive sections of the quarters and fenders with metal cut out.
Technically, yes it was rust free. laugh2

I'd rather have solid original sheet metal than being worried about a numbers matching engine. twocents

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol
