Has anyone seen this before?
I can't for the life of me think of anything that would cause this. shruggy
The engine ran fine for a few hours then started running badly
and it wouldn't rev at all but it ran just didn't sound pepie.
Then I opened up this can of worms. confused
What the heck is this? flame

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Wow.... how much overall run time on those parts. (I know you posted a few hours but parts look well used or old).

Parts look well used up. Time to replace.

Not more than 3 hours total.
I can't explain it. It looks like it just flashed off inside the cap
somehow.

I don't have any vent holes in the cap, that maybe
one problem.
But I don't know for sure.

Years ago I ran an MSD box on an HEI setup and the bushing under the rotor got hot and melted the plastic up good enough that it shut off. Maybe the rotor bushing gave up on you?

Had a similar deal on my Chevy pickup (HEI) last year.
Just putting along, then a couple misses, then a few LOUD backfires through the exhaust, then cleared up.
Drove it 5 miles home and started looking it over.
Rotor had exploded at the center contact.
How the thing cleared up & made it home is beyond my understanding.
Replaced cap & rotor - and 2 pooched mufflers - and it's been fine since.

vent the new caps up wrench
Mopar use to advice that, drill several vent holes in those early caps, on all the Mopar caps using any of the MSD race boxes thumbs
I would drill 4 1/4 inch holes between every other spark plug wire terminal up Some guys would drill the sides, any thing was better than no holes to vent the air out of the cap shruggy

Thanks, I was hoping that was at least one of the solutions. I had been leaning that way
but I wasn't sure if it could have caused my problem. But it looks like a consensus on this thread so
I for one am going with the group on this.
Thank you all for your input it was very helpful.

PS. I don't know how this ting kept running either. shruggy

Electricity is like water, it goes to the path of least resistance. The spark should want to flow to the plugs into the block where the ground is, looks like it had trouble finding an easy path.
I would be checking my plug wires, and engine grounds. If you know somebody that can use an ignition scope, after you get it running again, have them check it out. A scope is the only way to watch an ignition system work in real time under a load. Kind of a dying art, but nothing is better to diagnose ignition problems.

like the saying goes : "you can't have too many [good quality] grounds !" up
the emphasis on the good quality is my insertion. good crimps or solder joints, bare metal to metal attaching points, and appropriate size wire gauge are very important if the grounds are to do the job they need to do !

Every crank trigger ignition I've seen had nothing to do with spark distribution work shruggy
Crank trigger using a coil on plug type ignition will cure his distributor cap corrosion problems up scope

I'd asked since my cap and rotor looked similar when I had the phasing off. It had actually had a little bit of the rotor start to melt. I was one tooth off of the rotor belt from where it should have been. Just a thought.

Back in the 90's I had a Chrysler minivan that started going through caps and rotors just like that about every 400 miles. I finally swapped out the distributor to solve the problem. I have no idea to this day what would have caused it.

If I had to guess, low battery voltage while cranking the engine over....Current goes up as voltage goes down.

I will check the grounds, in fact I will add additional grounds.
Hear is an update.
I took a closer look at the rotor and this is what i found.
It looks like the rotor stood to tall under the cap, I didn't
know that was posible. shruggy

Cap view. It looks like where the cap meets the rotor overheated
and melted.
I don't know if it was because of to much pressure between the two
or a flesh off between the two.
Or could it be a case of miss match of parts shruggy

This is a new cap next to the old one.

Adding to the confusion the dase is vented but I will admit
it may not be enough although I have used thus setup
for a few years know.
I just dont know, the parts may have been defective.

P.S. I've believed I had a comp 9000 series Mallory setup
but when looking up the replacement parts I noticed
none have the screw holes what gives. shruggy
