I got a NOS cable for my '79 W150. Mine works but I put a new gauge in and got the cable for good price so want to replace it too. Since the NOS one has been shelfed for long time I want to lube. I thought the cable on these pulled out of housing for lubrication but it does not. Isn't it supposed to? Nothing in FSM. I don't want to use a dry lube because I believe it's probably lubed from factory with a grease type lube. Can I spray something like lithium grease down the housing? Should the cable pull out of the housing like I've done with others? Or should I just install right out of the box?

Thanks. Larry

I've been using synthetic disc brake grease with PTFE, graphite and molybdenum. It won't attack plastic or rubber, is very persistent throughout an incredible temperature range and resists wash out extremely well. So far it seems to be the perfect lubricant on a myriad of applications that spin, slide, rotate or move.

I think it should pull out one end or the other.

jbc426 thanks for info.

Stumpy, that's what I thought. Maybe it's stuck so I'll try again.

Thank you. Larry

They make specific lube for speedometer cables. NAPA should have it

Does it spin easily ? If so I would leave it but if It`s stuck or hard to turn then I would spray some WD40 on it to loosen it. Then pull out and clean and lube again. It only pulls out from one end.

I tried with my fingers but it didn't spin but I really couldn't grab it good. I'm gonna try with a rag and needle nose and see if I can spin and gently work cable out. Thanks.

Sniper thanks for link.

It should come out from the speedo end. Be very careful not to unravel the square ends while using the pliers..

(PB) Blaster makes several lubricants that will work for lubing cables and you can find them at any of those big box home improvement stores.....maybe even a local auto parts store also?

Larry call a local motorcycle dealer and ask if they have one of these cable lubers, One that's been around for a while...maybe an old Yamaha dealer as that's where this device was first sold back in the early '70's. With this luber there's no need to remove the inner cable just attach it and with a straw and the lubricant of your choice you'll be done in minutes.

I used a product called Sil-Glyde, but from what I could tell most everyone recommends white lithium grease. Remove the cable, slather it down, and shove it back in. One end has a collar crimped on the end, it pulls from that end.

No grease on speedo cables, unless you live somewhere it never gets below 60 degrees. Powdered Graphite is best, but ATF works in a pinch.

I’ll check out the video A12 thanks. I know some greases require heat like bearing grease and others will harden with cold weather. I used “fifth wheel grease” on my power windows because I noticed it stayed very silky even in cold weather but this is Florida and we don’t freeze often. But since there is specific grease for speedometer cable I might as well use. I just don’t like the idea of a dry lube like graphite mixed with the grease lube it was all ready lived with from the factory.

Mother Mopar used to sell Speedo Lube, in a tube. I have a multi lifetime supply of the stuff. I have no idea how similar it is to other products. However, if I didn't have it, I'd try a lithium based grease.

Cold weather and a thick grease will cause needle bounce. I always used a graphite spray lube.

I dunno, the good (lithium) stuff I've got is similar in viscosity to the mopar speedo lube. The cheap stuff, (valvoline) is sometimes thin to the point of oily. I can't recall the good brand, it's in the gun, I tossed the valvoline.

Yes, white lithium grease is pretty thin so I can see that being ok, although I've not tried it.
