not sure what went wrong but it is definitely has issues now! (yes Larry the police engine I got from you. LOL!)

lets see, installed it January 2020, a 89 360 headed 318 police engine so it got a re-gasket complete engine, install 318 whiplash roller cam/comp 901 springs/t-chain-gears/OEM roller valvetrain.
Holley STREET Dominator intake, 600 Edelbrock, headers. has ran great till March... this is me think I can make it better. LOL! so I swap on a edelbrock RPM air-gap intake with a Holley 650DP, marked the damper for 32* then recurved dist. with MrGasket mech advance spring kit, set timing at 32*, adjust carb out and WOW! but couple weeks ago gased up and thought I might have got bad gas or the switch from winter blend to summer blend. it would start acting like it was getting vaper lock if you push it over 3000rpm kinda go flat and act like it was real lean with a little mis fire/poping. back off and it seemed to catch up and go again. when it would do this the more throttle you add the more it would slow down and act like it lost over 1/2 the cyls.

ok check fuel filter and it would be full 2out of 10 times checking other time almost empty and pumping bubbles. replaced fuel pump. better but same thing. remove t-stat to reduce heat (mech pump hot and intake carb Luke warm but fuel boiling in line to carb metal duel feed line hot.

ok so run complete new fuel system, swapped to eclectic pump, with return line to tank, add regulator feeding 1/4" return and 5/16" feed to carb. ok fixed the vapor lock issue it seems as now fuel is not boling in line/duel feed metal line much cooler, filter stays full all the time now.

same thing, get going and it falls flat. try to accelerate above 50 mph and back off it seems to recover. now me thinks it is IGN related... change out dist/coil/wires/cap/plugs. - points dist is set up with pertronix conversion with pertronix coil. (coil does get hot-all ways has. so new points dist/new pertronix conversion/new pertronix coil even removed keyd IGN wire and replaced with power right from BATT to rule out a fusible link going bad.

same thing so not fuel not IGN it seems. then I fire it up last Friday morning and go for a ride. it is kind of bumping like it is missing but not a mis fire miss??? 3 miles down the road I try to speed up and it start popping like a shotgun out the driver tail pipe more I try to go the more of a machine gun effect it gave load as a shotgun. [censored]?? make it 4-5 miles and stop let it idle sounds ok at low speed and after15 mins or so I start to go pop a couple time then like it just started running ok...I get down on it and it really turns on like nothing wrong slow down and then try again back to popping???

so getting ready to pull it and tear it down. going to run a comp test next but think I may have collapsed a lifter (which are really high mileage) bent a PR or have a bent/sticking valve. I have had this whiplash roller cam in about 4 engines now so it has a lot of miles as well so I will look it over good too.

in 2017 I installed this engine as I got it with a flat tappet cam but I missed a PR in the rocker cup. I hand rolled it over and noticed it had a little bind spot but did not pay close attention. fired up with a miss and I kept at it till it spit a PR out and wiped the cam lobe. so pulled it and got it ready for 2020 and now its 2021 and time for a new bullet. I make a post on the new 318 going in.

one thing I can say after all these years wrenching on my junk, it sure is fun to hammer the crap out of them and they always run their best just before the break something. I guess I can say the 650DP might have been a little to much for it. LOL!!

Dang Mike sorry to hear. Yes that was an 89 Diplomat Police 318-4 we tossed into the back of your truck for the ride back to your Mopar ranch. Sounds like a burnt exhaust valve kind of. Knowing you it will be better and stronger than ever when you’re done up

AND I sure tell you what..the last time I had points and the condenser went out it did that popping bucking and I had run pertronix for so long I forgot what the symptoms of bad points/cond were like and paid a shop 50bux to change the condenser. this go round I said well I don't have a condenser this go round for sure so what the hay.

forget a tune up I will just swap out the whole engine for a fresh new one. reset the odometer to 00000000 and ride.

Here I was expecting to see pictures of a hurt 318, kind of disappointed... whistling

The last 318 I hurt had a broken crankshaft, but it did beat the big block Chevelle SS the night before. It kind of sounded like a bad lifter for the first mile or so (had good oil pressure). I don't have any pictures of that hurt 318, too many years ago. I don't have any pictures of the one I burned a hole through the top of one piston and almost through the top of the second piston either... Gene

sorry to disappoint poorboy. This 318 is a Special one and the 2nd time I have hurt it without killing it. I am not sure on how to post pics anymore and have a boat load of them to share but my dumb phone has them all and only text them to other phones...that could all be the user though.

I had a fresh set of heads from machine shop drop exhaust valve first 3 hrs of run time. end of valve broke and was stuck in the retainer/rotator rod/pin beat the cyl the heck. should have taken pics.

Thanks Larry,

I will start with the heads fresh from the machine shop before I gasket match. Larry if you would put them on my engine build post and I just go from there with pics.
