I must have read 300 threads over the last year on the Fuel control Actuator before I took the plunge. I had no codes for anything in the fuel system.

I had been wondering about the funny quirks my 06 5.9 truck has had for a long time. It had a funny rhythmic vibration at idle when hot, the turbo lag was getting longer, it had a pinging like a gas motor at throttle tip in and half pedal, it had a light lope to it when it was really cold outside and lastly the fuel mileage on the overhead was slowly falling. A couple of times I had dead pedal when I left a light. Power was still there, I've been across the scales at 19000 lbs lately, truck didn't seem weak with the foot down.

I had read about all the checks for the FCA, stuff like if it rattles its good, if the idle goes up when its unplugged, if you put 2 stroke oil in the fuel and it runs better etc. Tried all of that, it past all those tests, on the scan tool it showed the fuel pressure off target from 300-400 psi when hot, found a lot of posts claiming if it's within 500 psi of commanded pressure, it's working properly.

Well I bought a genuine Bosch part from Rockauto, and the truck now runs like it did when it was new. No rattle, no pinging, no vibration, no lope, no dead pedal , lag is almost non existent.

On the scan tool, the rail pressure is now <100 psi different. than commanded. The old FCA still hit high peak rail pressures, it just fluctuated back and forth over setpoint.

I had read about people claiming that retiming the injection gear gets rid of the fuel rattle noise. It doesn't look like thats a real fix, one might be just retiming the out of cycle fuel pulsations caused by a hunting FCA.

The FCA was original, truck has 585,000 km's on it,I wish I would have just changed it at 500k.

CRC Diesel Fuel Therapy works some wonders for some of those issues.... I’m not a big additive fan, but I have several customers that we’ve run the stuff through and they were impressed enough to call back or stop in and thank me.

I run 2cycle oil in my 01 especially when it’s hot and we’re towing. My 01 antique was not designed around the ULSD fuel. Actually got that blessing from Cummins years ago has the extreme heat out here would thin the newer fuels enough to set a P0216 code on the older VP trucks.

I keep some of the Lucas additive in the truck for some of the low quality fuel we get around here sometimes. Truck is so quiet now, I want it to stay that way.

I have an 01 Cummins. Tell me about the 2 stroke oil. How much do I add for a full tank of diesel? What kind of 2 stroke oil.

A friend of mine works on road service trucks,on the older diesels they use a pint per tank.Usually they are light duty like the 5.9 Cummins Dodges with a 30ish gal tank.I have Bel-Ray oils semi-synthetic two stroke at my shop,he said that would be fine.

Most folks use motorcycle oil, some use waste oil. I think there was some benefit for the VE pump engines after low sulfur fuel was introduced in 1993? There were pump failures from lack of adequate sulfur lubrication. I don't think the P7100 or VP pump engines get any benefit at all. VP pumps seem to mostly suffer electronic failures. If you're going to add something think about maybe Motorcraft PM-22-A ULSD Compliant Cetane Booster and Performance Improver. ~ 20 years ago I preferred Mobil Diesel as it seemed to have the highest cetane rating at the time. In recent years I haven't seen any difference in any fuels, so I took to adding the motorcraft product. Seems to run a bit smoother, gains a small amount of mileage, not enough to offset the cost but it's there.

I run the stroke oil in my 01, and mix it at approximately 100:1, so about a quart per fill. I use the cheap marine 2 stroke oil from Walmart. The marine stuff is to be less smokey (I know, moot point in a diesel), and better for corrosion resistance and be less gummy. Been doing it for 10 years and not had any injector/Vp44 pump problems. The one thing I did find is change in mpg. On the few times I had no 2 stroke oil, I would get up to 1-2 mpg better without the oil. I still would rather pay that price, than having mechanical issues.
