Seems like a great idea, I can spend $2-3k to sleep on top of my car.
Or spend $75-$150 for a 2-person pop up that folds up into a 1x3 canvas pouch that's fits in the trunk.

What am I missing?

What are you missing? Having only camped once in my 53 yrs, I can see the appeal of both, That being said, I kinda like the idea of being up off the ground. It'd be my luck someone decides to steal my car while I'm camped on top of it........ runaway

Hate it. Phord. That is a nice Mustang actually and kudos for actually using your car but I don't think I'd want to put this kind of extra weight on my classic. I'd drive it but not this.

I don't care for tent camping, because of rain and storms and lack of creature comforts. But this is cool. If I was 20 something, I'd do it. Traveling in a vintage car, no motel hassles or expense, no trailer. up

Went on a camping trip 5-6 years ago with a tent. It was awesome for the first day, but it turned cold and rainy after that and it went from the best camping trip to the worst and I vowed never to camp in a tent ever again. I LOVE camping out of my 4runner now though, just fold the rear seats flat, air mattress, screen over the windows to keep bugs out, sleep like a baby and its bear safe too!

I've seen similar setups on pick up trucks. I'd love something like this on my Power Wagon. Something that's HD in nature and made to handle weight and off road travel.

I'm intrigued by this. A lot of these roof tents weigh well under 200lbs. I may not be able to go off road, but I'm sure my wagon could handle the weight. Figure, my wagon is supposed to be able to carry 9 passengers....... work

Yes, your wagon would be a very cool one for this. Lots of room inside as well and I would think a higher GVR. Also a nice car but not so nice you have to be afraid to use like this.....same as my Power Wagon. This Mustang is taking a lot of the weight on the A pillar but the rear tent mount is not really in a good spot from what I see. I wouldn't more than one small to medium size person up there.
