I'm putting a new gas tank in my Dart and due to it being pretty grungy and having some rust, I media blasted the filler tube and am going to paint it. My question is, is it O.K. to paint it all the way to the end that goes in the tank or should I only paint it to the flange where the tube enters the tank and leave the end bare?

There is a company that you can send it to and they will put the tin/lead coating back on it.

I’d go this route if you can.

Paint & gasoline generally are not a good mix.
If you go with paint, I'd say leave anything that contacts fuel bare.
By the same token, I wouldn't want that area to rust.
I agree that plating would be the best.

If you don't go back with the tin plating maybe painting the outside with a fuel tank liner/sealer is an option.

I have painted origianl gas tanks and filler tubes with Rustoleum Silver Hammertone Paint and it looked like original zinc when done. I have passed it off in some tough judging shows as original. People could not believe how close to original the paint looked on the gas tank. Just my input.

Do you have any pictures of your painted gas tank? Thanks!

Sorry, I don't have a good picture of the tank. It was on a near concourse restoration of my 1969 Charger R/T SE car. For $8 you can pick up a spray can and test it out on some other metal part. It gives the correct texture and appearance of zinc finish.

Sounds like you may have already removed the coating, but I was able to clean mine up with steel wool and WD40. Removed the crud, but didn't remove the lead coating.
