Heres my set up ....which heads would you run?

3400 65 b body
383. Stock bottom end. 1970 short block ultra low mileage. Zero ridge factory cross hatch still in place.
Crower .500 / 290 advertised mech flat tapped lifter
Tunnel ram with 450 holleys
Hooker comp headers. 3inch exhaust. Summit flow master knock offs
Crane iron rockers
Mallory unilite dist.
143 tooth flywheel. 23 spline 833 with liberty pro shift gears
Dana 60. 4.10 power lock.
Mini tubbed. 325/50-15 tires

Currently have ported 452's in the shop. 2.14 / 1.81 valves.
Have a local guy with a set of e street and a set of rpm eddy heads.
Both 75 cc chambers. Prices are reasonable.
Compression ratio figured in my head: 452s have been surfaced. Steel shim head gasket
452 heads 9:1
Eddy heads 9.75:1

With those compression numbers i think my cam is too big but then again i have seen worse run well. Crower recommended 9.2:1
Not moving away from solid lifters.....and this is the short block I have ready so I'm sticking with that.

Thinking the 75 cc chambers will help.....
I could mill my 452s down.

Which heads would you choose? Rpm ports too big for a 383?

Im unlikely to go smaller in camshaft. In fact i have two larger ones on the shelf.
Next one up is an stx19 racer brown mech flat tappet.

Which heads would you use or please feel free to correct my combo.

Its a street/strip car.....i don't plan to rack up miles and miles cruising.

I used to care but....... things have changed

I’ve been away from a major engine rebuild for awhile....

But one thing I know is QUENCH....

And you can’t get that with 452s

Closed chambered alum heads please up

All the fast 383 motors I've seen, built and help race had to be revved up(above 7000 RPM boogie) to go fast up
Post the duration at .050 lobe lift, lobe separation angle and the actual lobe lift please on all the cams you have that you want to use up
As far as my choice based on heads I have used I would choose the Eddy RPMs only up

Piston to valve clearance may dictate which camshaft you can run without notching the pistons. The RB STX15 is .249@.05". You may not have the clearance you desire if ground on 108 or tighter. FWIW, I have a 383 with pistons .02" positive deck. I was able to fit a 242/252@.05"/110 with milled 906s 2.08/1.74, but it was tight (.060") and there was no room to move the cam.

None of the heads are too big.

How fast are you wanting to go?
Are you going to run pump gas?

If it is factory 383 short block there is a good chance that the pistons are in the hole at least .030, so closed chamber or not quench wiil be difficult.

If I'm not mistaken the E streets and rpm's are the same head. I'll bet they still outflow the 452's ootb. What is reasonably priced if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for the replies. I have been trying to find my cam specs online since I'm travelling but i will have to find them when i return home.

I can buy like new rpms for about $1000. E streets for less.

I used to care but....... things have changed

Stx19m cam specs attached.

The crower is grind 32001.
.500 lift with 1.5 arm. Advertised duration 300
254 degrees at .050. Lobe separation 105

I do have a crane cc280 as well. Cannot find the specs on it.

I cannot find my depth mix to measure the piston height

Im not opposed to decking the block.

Those valve spring pressures are way lower than I would use down
I'm thinking 140 Lb. to 160 Lb. on the seats and 350 Lb.to 380 Lb. over the nose twocents
I would want more lift for those duration also thumbs
I use to use the original Racer Brown for cams in my motors, I did buy and use both the STX20 and STX 21 cams, I wasn't smart enough to record and keep those cam specs though realcrazy
I think the STX22 and STX 23 grinds were consider to be SS grinds and to be used on roller cams mainly shruggy

That cam came from AndyF. I'm assuming that's his writing on the box.
I have three different sets of valve springs. I don't recall the specifics on each but one set should work.
Not sure i can run more lift. Ill have to clay it up.

Im going to get the rpm heads.

Still would like for opinions on this build.

To me this is a no brainer! Get the rpm heads. Heads are not by any means too big.
Fwiw I had a 383 12.5 to 1 with ported 915s and a 590 cam.
It liked rpm but one day at the track a wise man told me he bet I would run the same numbers shifting at 6k.
He was correct. With rpm heads I think it’s as good a combo as you’re going to get with what you have.
Good luck 👍
With 9.75 to 1 I don’t think your cam is too big but I would not go any bigger. If you stay with 452 and 9 to 1 I would agree it’s too large.

E-street heads are not for use with mechanical cams due to the valve seat material. I'd say RPMs as well.

fast68plymouht has said that the last few years the seat material is the same between the RPM's and the Estreet heads.

In my opinion the big difference between the two if you set aside the springs is the combustion chamber size. you can get the Estreet in something like 76cc or so. Seems like a good way to go if someone wanted to get some compression with a stock stroke 383 or 400.
