i'm considering locking my Pro billet dist. Does the starter saver work as advertised or is it an unreliable gimmick ? I'm still running an 6AL analog ignition box.

I have a MSD Billet dizzy locked-out with a 20 tear-old 6AL. I tried a MSD start retard box. It worked, but I noticed the timing retarding as rpm's increased. I read somewhere that it's a common issue. I removed the start retard and the issue went away. You may want to consider a fast crank with a separate ignition switch.
Get the engine cranking and then turn on the ignition.
Powermaster makes a starter that's designed to crank at a faster speed.
Your results may vary.
I also needed an adjustable rotor to clock it at the tower. Go figure. I may sell the bunch and go crank/cam trigger with CNP.

You are probably fine without the starter saver if you have a good starter and battery. I ran 35* locked out for a long time with no saver or anything. I did eventually train myself to crank it then turn the ignition on to ease things but it wasn't needed.

I did eventually train myself to crank it then turn the ignition on to ease things but it wasn't needed. I'm still running an old factory starter, new battery. Next time the engine comes out it'll have a mini starter. I was just trying to avoid the ignition cut off switch.

Here's my issue. My car wants more idle timing. Currently it's @ 24 with a 10 degree bushing total is 34. All in about 2000. Idles around 12-1300 but it's not happy. Cam is 271 @ 50. With the MSD dist. if you bump the idle timing up to say 28 then the total goes to 38. Other than modifying the advance slots for less total, locking is the only option. Or buy something programmable.

You should be able to change the rate of advance with lighter rate advance springs or possibly using only one spring to bring that advance in dramatically quicker.That would allow you to keep your 24* base and have your 1200 to 1300rpm timing already in a higher advance position, yet keeping your total at your desired 34*. If it already starts well at 24* degrees, you just need a rate change. Experiment with stretching a spring a little at a time possibly in conjunction with eliminating one.Chevy racers used to do that trick years ago on their stock distributors and they appear to be quite similar to the MSD billet dist. Bill I thought about trying 1 spring. I have a bunch of springs from some of the Chev's I had. No problems starting at 24 or even 26. I could still put a switch on the box as a backup.
