I have a couple of questions regarding changing the fluid and filter for my 727 and for some odd reason the search function didn't pull anything up here for whatever reason. Anyways, my transmission is 727 that has been rebuilt about 4-5k miles ago. I bought the vehicle with this transmission and not sure what fluid was used prior. It's behind a 408 stroker with headers and a 2500 stall along with an external transmission cooler. My first question was is I'm just wondering if I would okay to use ATF +4 plus fluid in this transmission? I read somewhere that it could be better since my headers are fairly close to the transmission and ATF +4 tolerates heat better.
The other question I have is an ATP Filter a good brand filter? I thought about a NOS Mopar one but, then I though nah probably too old. I think this might of been covered before but, as I said nothing came up when I searched. Thank you in advance for any help or information you could provide.

hi 408 stroker with 4-5000 miles , why do you need to change the fluid with such low miles ? most all hi performance torqueflights use type F fluid , it is what i put in all my rebuilds ! wallmart brand works great . i would not think about a fluid change till 30,000 + miles . all stock typefilter should be fine , screen filter for race only . if your fluid is still red and doesn't stink or smell burnt run it I've drag race and won with Mopars since 1964, standard type F non synthetic is the only fluid choice I will use in them Change when needed /
Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Thank you all. The are a couple of reasons why I'm wanting to change the fluid now is because I have a receipt for this transmission but, not sure of the fluid they used other than I think the receipt says synthetic but, not certain. Changing the fluid now allows me to start on what I know I'm putting in and the filter being used. The other reason is to inspect to make sure there is nothing wrong with the transmission and just take a look at things. I bought the vehicle in this configuration and the prior owner had a shop do the work. I just want to be able to know and start something so I continue using the same stuff on a basis in the future when needed. The reason why I was asking about the fluid is I know ATF+4 is more slippery but, I read somewhere it also hold ups better to heat and the this vehicle has headers close by the transmission along with the exhaust setup so I wanted to confirm my thoughts on that.

Not sure of your concern about ATF + 4 being slippery. All the transmissions used it starting around 2000 model year at Chrysler. Even the HD diesel transmissions. The 48RE “works” the same as the 727, unmodulated clutch apply. If it will live in that environment it will live in a race car too. ATF + 4 has proven to improve geartrain durability too, and compared to the Dexron fluids geartrain durability was improved 4 fold. In a Chrysler 4 speed the overdrive especially.

My opinion, Ma Mopar made ATF+4 backward compatible so they wouldn't need to stock different fluids in the parts/service department. This doesn't mean it's the best choice for a non-lockup 3-speed.
If synthetic is desired, there are alternatives to +4.

408 stroker with 4-5000 miles , why do you need to change the fluid with such low miles ? i would not think about a fluid change till 30,000 + miles . If the fluid is 2+? years old then it should be changed due to oxidisation leeching out the goodies in the fluid over time, they put time and miles on change intervals for reasons other than making money

Thank you. I don't think the fluid has ever been changed since rebuild which is why I want to change to inspect the inside and the magnet on the pan. The fluid is definitely over 2 years old. In most applications using ATF-4, the owners manual says fill for life. Nothing about time in service but more like mileage or severe duty.
