Is it possible to remove and replace the vent window assembly without removing the door glass?
Anyone have detailed instructions with pictures?
The service manual leaves a lot to be desired.
I am sure it was fine back in the day for trained technicians.
My car is completely together but the driver's side vent window is messed up and does not seal so I purchased the reproduction complete vent window assembly and just don't want to screw up anything while replacing the assembly.

The door glass has to come out. It rides in the vent glass assembly.

It is definitely not a quick job but I am tired of the wind whistling so it has to come out.

Depending on where the whistle is coming from, you may be able to adjust the vent frame and/or the door glass to eliminate it.
Typically you want the vent frame as high & forward as it will adjust (and fit when closing the door).
Door glass needs to fit tightly to roof seal.

Don't know if you've tried that already, or if the vent glass is whistling at its seal.

Just a heads up. The plastic strip/seal that clips onto the front edge of the door glass with 4 white shoes that rides up and down in the "division channel" (the rear vertical frame of the vent window) is unobtanium right now. They used to be like $100-150/pair from Mopar. I've seen them for $1000/pair recently. After Chrysler was "taken over" they discontinued a bunch of important stuff. Those were one of them.

1) If you don't know what I'm talking about, look into it cause there's nothing available to replace them. I've asked high end resto shops what they're doing and they said they are just putting it back together with the shoes only.

2) If you do know what I'm talking about and have replaced them with original Mopar pieces at some point BE VERY CAREFUL.

Oh wow! I must have gotten lucky. I found a pair about 18 months ago or so. I just installed them.

I am having trouble picturing the part you are talking about. Do you have a link to pictures? At that price, I would think it could make sense to reproduce.

So heres the deal. I investigated the HELL outta these.


Originals - The originals were discontinued in fall of 2019. I have senior management friend at Mopar headquarters that couldn't find info on these. Not sure why so top secret. In fact I had people that worked under him come up to me at Mopar shows and tell me he had sent them on a hunt for the engineering drawings on these. Was told the only other place info could be is in storage in downtown Detroit. I was hoping I could pay a licensing fee and just have the original manufacturer continue to make them.

Former Reproductions - One company made reproductions. They were bad but thats all that was available. People would call and complain even though I tried talking everyone out of them. The fit was bad. They tore when installing. They even melted in the bags when I would hang them at shows in the summer sun. This manufacturer stopped making them last fall.

Year One USED to make a VERY nice looking reproduction. Ron Fellwock showed me a fist fill of them at the Indy show a couple years ago. I bought a couple and they looked and fit real good but again the material wasnt correct. Year One said they lost thier tooling or vendor in China and would be starting from scratch.

New Reproductions - 2 companies tell me they are/were apparently working on them. I was actually in the loop with one company test fitting prototypes. The last prototype had a smaller pocket that wrapped around the door glass but otherwise looked and actually fit great BUT the material wasn't correct. A 2nd company has been saying they are reproducing them but its been a couple years. I quit asking. 2 others called me recently. One said a friend whos an engineer is working on remaking them. Another Mopar guy with plastics background (most promising person I know) called a couple months ago and asked if I'd be interested in pursuing them. No return call.

Material - By not correct I mean the originals are made from "cloudy Mylar" (there's a long scientific name). It holds up in temp extremes AND it had memory. All the other reproduction s don't have memory. These pieces need to be spread open to punch the holes for the "shoes". The originals would SNAP back into shape. Any of the reproductions I saw didn't snap back. Big problem. Plus, like I mentioned above, they would melt in the summer sun if the wrong material. I'd say thats a problem too., I personally wouldn't sell them

My background is industrial automation mostly for the auto companies and plastic parts manufacturers. It LOOKS so easy but theres a BUNCH to know about molds, tooling, plastics that I would never assume that's somethin g I could take on. I have watched people get stung making parts and they didn't work for many reasons. For example all plastic parts shrink. When molds are made a shrink factor has to be designed in depending on the material. In the auto industry like door or dash pieces I would see a 1-1/2% shrink factor meaning the parts have to be made 1-1/2% LARGER so they will be close to correct when they cool. THAT would be a huge learning curve for a newbie. Plastic molds are expensive. Molds for these would be like $6-10k even in China.

Flocking - Thats the next step after the parts are made. Parts would be sent to a company that puts the flocking on. Plastic molding companies don't flock. Flocking would be the easiest part of the process.

On my car it is the vent glass itself where there is a gap that is not sealed. The vent window frame fits and seals well.

Thread turned into a good discussion. Thanks all.
Hopefully someone will come through and come up with good reproductions of the clips.

I'm no expert but have taken a few of the vents apart test fitting that darn division channel seal. Didn't see where there was much if any adjustment for the triangular glass.

Here's one thing I do know about the seals. The Metro ones (in the purple bag) are the good vent window seals. Soft and compliant. The Precision ones (in the green bag) are VERY HARD rubber. I had customers return them cause they couldn't get them installed. I don't sell them.

I need these for my 68 Dart convertible. I bought the black topcat brand ones. They look nothing like the original clear plastic pieces. The other ones listed in the link say they fit hardtop and post. I don't think an A-body convertible is different in this area. Can anyone confirm?

The vent channel is the same on convertible (A-body at least). I guess I was lucky enough to get NOS set when I did my car. Only difference I know of on doors for convertible is the glass itself (top taper) and the plastic wedge thing that hits on the door jamb spring.

If someone buys the ones from that link, please post some pictures of them. Like I said, the ones I bought look nothing like the original ones and I don't see how I can make them work.

Just installed a set that I've owned for a while. What a pain! It very well may be the brand I bought year ago, but I had a hard time installing them in to the channel without tearing them. Also possible that I was doing something wrong. Absolutely ruined the fairly easy task of installing the window assemblies. Even more nerve racking knowing if you ruin the set you have, you may not find others.
