As title says. I'm building one up to replace the original one in my 85 D150. Figured I could build a better engine being I don't have to spend money on a V8 pan,V8 mounts, V8 radiator, V8 trans, etc
Got block back from machine shop 20-over, crank std/std, they still have the head for o/s valves and finish porting, as well as a shave.
I sent the cam in for a regrind, hogged out the exhaust manifold outlet, am adding a super 6 (have NOS BBD carb here for it)
Has 727 trans that will stay (YES I can tell a 727 from a 904! 3.21 gears.

More converter and gears with those the better. Header and a good flowing exhaust are pluses. They have very low compression so increasing that would be good if there is a way to do it.

Unless you are going to tow (had to say that) I would install a late model 998/999 with the low gearset and lockup.
Better mileage and better 1st and 2nd gear launch. Less power loss too through the smaller trans.

No, no love for the /6 here. Waste of fuel, a punishment vehicle if you have a Brat for a new driver in your Family.

I have one of them Turds in a Turd ('83 Ram). How anyone put up with these gutless, wheezing things and certainly no fuel mileage to brag about is beyond Me. I will say it's the best starting Chrysler product I've ever owned but that's about where it ends.

Sounds similar to a build my father and I did to a 258 Jeep six in a full size Cherokee. I can't remember what we had into it cost wise, but with the head work (big valves, port and polish) it was a good amount. While the finished product was certainly better than it was before, but even if lucky you're still looking at south of 250 HP. The next Jeep that we built is a J10 that originally had a 258 as well. That motor got yanked for a 360 V8 with nothing more than an RV cam shaft with none of the fancy head work the previous 258 received and it ran circles around it.

Not intentionally trying to dump on the /6, but all domestic inline six motors I've worked on (Ford 300, Jeep 258 and Chrysler 225) as Grizzly put it, are wheezy and gutless.

I wonder if lack of a crossflow head on all of these motors is what causes the gutlessness and not the cylinder configuration. All have the intake and exhaust on the same side. Just thinking out loud....

I have seen a 6 cyl 300 ford outrun all the v 8's and set the track record on a 1/2 mile oval race track.... its hard to be humble when that happens !!

I've owned ONE. Don't plan on it again...

Well, two sort of. One of them was a German slant six. That thing would scoot...

DO what Transman said , 904 wide ratio will make it run like a v8 , mill the block and head to raise the compression !

A local guy here did that in the 70's with that engine platform. Mostly 1/4 mile dirt tracks. Can't remember if it was a 240 or a 300 but V8s were very restricted by the rules under DIRT, basically a stock engine with a cam, 600 Holley and headers.

The only rules for a six was it had to run on gasoline and use a cast intake.

With 3 Webers, big cam, ported head and lots of compression, it laid waste to the field, for one season... lol. Rule change, no more multiple carbs and there wasn't a cast single 4 manifold that could do the job the Webers did.

I had a 67 Valiant with the 170. Very sweet car, but it got a wrist pin knock.
Swapped in a later Super 6 from a truck and it was a toad. Couldn't get the thing to
outrun a taxicab, fuel mileage went in the toilet, just a bad match.
I should have fixed the 170. I would still be driving that thing.

It may be ugly, but it sure is slow.

Because they can't afford to build the flathead six instead.

Says the guy with not just one, but two flathead sixes.

My truck has a slant and I intend to keep it that way as it runs good have other fast cars so it doesn't need to be fast. If it blew up and needed replacing, not sure then.....

Love is blind still holds true, but a full confession, I am blind, and building a EFI Intercooled 4 sp Turbo slant. eyes

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.
