Need to some repairs to a 79 Dodge truck wiring harness and wondering what the recommendation is here crimping tools for the connectors that connect to the fuse block and bulkhead connector. Also anyone know a good source the connectors and wiring? I've read about the S&G Crimps but, you cut a slot in one of the dies from the research I found. Also, just wondering if the standard Packard 56 terminals will work? My understanding is that Chrysler changed the terminals slightly in the late 70s? The biggest culprit in my wiring harness that I can see the wiring from the interior/cargo lights to the bulkhead. Thank you in advance.

I have been using this crimper from Napa for years. Part #: NW 726603 It is very versatile, and with a little practice you will get good results. I like to solder the connection as well. I crimp the wire first, then solder, and finally crimp the insulation end of the connector. Be aware that you only want to solder the very tip of the wire to the connector. If the solder runs down the wire into the insulation it makes the wire prone to cracking.

The bigger problem you'll find is get the male terminals if you need those too. i never have seen those being sold around.

I have used the later male plugs into the older female plugs such as later engine bay harnesses into my 74 bulkhead and they fit. Now, I can't say if Female terminals will fit correctly without any play into the plugs. Males definitelly not. What I made once is cut the later engine bay harnesses with couple of inches of wires from terminal and splice it into my harness.

Lack of strain relief is the issue here

Thank you. I will see what I can come up. My main focus in the cargo/dome lamp wiring part of the dash harness and then going to look at the headlight switch harness. Looks like someone tapped in the harness for the switch but, it works fine. The good thing is on the engine side I will be installing a headlight relay kit for this truck. Ammeter converted to a voltmeter and LED dash bulbs.

But your Ammeter is ( or should be ) a shunted ammeter! You didn't need to make the conversion with that!

If dome light plug is like passenger car dome lights it uses molex standard terminals 0,063" which are available around ( terminals and plugs )

Not on this truck. I pulled parts from another 79 truck that had a melted ammeter and seen a 78 with the same issue as well. Dodge didn't completely change the harness and fuse block until 1981 on the trucks from what I understand where they switched from the glass fuses to the blade style and change the fuse block location as well.

You're right. Trucks used the old style ammeter until the dash and other changes for 1981.
