I will be sitting down with my parts supplier to spec some custom B1 original pistons and I was wondering what others have bought previously.
Mine will be a 4.500" bore piston for 4.500" stroke (572 CID), with Koffel's B1 original heads with 2.30" dia intake valves and 1.78" dia exhaust valves.
Mine will be a flat top since my heads are milled to 60cc already.
I am planning 0.043" top and second rings; comments on 3/16 or 3mm oil ring?

What valve relief diameters and depths have you used?
Intake pocket dia:________Exhaust pocket dia:________
Intake pocket depth:______Exhaust pocket depth:______

Any other piston specs you can share would be good for comparison too.
What weight should I look for when ordering a 1.36" CH piston 4.500" dia? Lightening methods?
1) Mill under valve pocket area ?
2) Internal mill skirt area ?
3) Internal mill ring belt area ?

Jim, here is my Ross piston sheet. 4.5x4.5. But they are for a .500 short hemi block (original 10.750 deck) with a 7.100 rod. Hope it helps. Originally designed for a Brewer Head but valve pockets are same for B1. 2.30 and 1.78.

Thanks Dave.
Interesting that Ross doesn't put the valve pocket diameter on that sheet. The racer that gave me the Ross box (insert?) above gave me his sheet also, and it doesn't show the dia on the sheet, just on the box info. FWIW, his 1.36 CH pistons weighed 574 grams.
This is what his flat top valve reliefs looked like.

I swapped out .043 rings for .9mm 25gras/cylinder lighter. Talk to Kevin Studaker at total seal.

Hi Jim, I have 4.5'' Venolia pistons to suit B1 originals. PM me with your phone number and I will send the pictures to your phone. I don't know how to send pictures on this site.

Your welcome to post my pictures on here when you receive them. cheers Rob.

I could take some pictures of my old pistons but they were 440-1 pistons and Tom Hemphill cut them for B1 pistons so I could run either heads. I changed them out for ones more nitrous friendly.

Jim I will have to see if I can dig up all my old info. It was so long ago I don’t remember off the top of my head. CP Nitrous Pistons. Photo was from the Sept ‘05 Mopar Muscle article on my motor.

Don,
Is that a clay molded impression of the piston top? smile

Its the two part Diamond Piston mold kit...

When I took a pic of the mold and saw it on the computer, it looked like it was looking back at me, so I put a face on it... boogie

Thanks to those who posted.
Related to above, how much bigger in diameter do you think the valve reliefs should be, compared to the valve dia?
i. e. I have 2.30 dia intake valve, should the relief be 2.35 dia or what?

that's only .025 radially. too close for all the moving parts. Should be 2.400 giving .050 radial clearance. I wouldn't want my intake valve that close (.025) to clipping the notch.

I agree with B1MAXX seeing that you haven't finalized your piston order yet. .025" is very close tolerance between two opposing high speed cycling components (piston rock, rod and valve stretch, lateral valve movement, etc). I think now is the time to fix that clearance rather than later when all parts have been designed and built. Had recently FOUND a radial valve to cylinder clearance issue after all the parts were built. Would have been very costly to change. Do it now, you will sleep better. Bill

Agree, also might want to think about the largest valve you can put in the head. You may want to upgrade at a later time..

Searched for my piston data, but hav not found them yet. Here´s some pics.
4.503 bore with 4.25 stroke CP pistons. 0,43 rings. Old Wiseco 4.50 piston to the right. Stock head type for B1BS heads.

Thanks Wade, that is a lot of specs. (Drag Week motor and your 4.36" bore B1 motor)
Both seem to have lots of valve pocket (relief) depth. What piston to valve clearance did you end up with on the 4.36" bore motor with 0.372/0.312 depths?
Even the drag week engine (4.500") with 0.330/0.270 depths should be plenty, right?

I will discuss with Todd when we sit down and write my actual order.
