We have a 68 H code 383 4 barrel Charger getting ready to restore. Car has a non stamped service block with the later pad stamp area by oil pan that has been in car for years but no paper work to prove done by dealership. It looks like it was done by dealer proably under somekind of warranty. Car has fender tag and build sheet and was a Bright Red car. I already have a couple of factory red cars and just really didnt want another red car. So my delema is keep red or I would like to change it to black. What do you think? I normal dont like to do color changes on cars.

I think sticking with the original color is best.
What's the interior color and VT color (if so equipped) ?

Also, on the engine, did you check the bellhousing flange area for #s ?

Here's one I owned (and in retrospect, was foolish to sell): 383 4spd AC car. White interior.

I always thought a black on black 68 Charger is one of the coolest looking cars ever, but I don’t think I would use a red car to make one.

I like both colors but changing is a lot of work, this ain’t no Chevy we’re you just paint the body. Car, trunk and under the hood all have to be painted the same. Nothing worse than a Mopar with engine compartment painted black and car another color and speckle paint in the trunk.

Car has had new 1/4's and trunk pan replace and is apart ready for body work and a full repaint. So now is the time to figure out what I want to to do. The motor is a late 69 casting so I know its not the original motor. Black interior with a/c and console automatic. I was thinking of putting my 528 Hemi in the car since it already did not have the original engine in it.

Either way you’ll have to take the phone off the hook with so many buyers

i will probably get flamed for but this comment.

if you ask me a non numbers matching 383 charger with different motor than the original one, with a non numbers trans, in the original color. really isn't worth much more than a color changed color one. with all of the changes to it having documentation won't really make any difference.

IT'S YOUR CAR. do what you want with it.

I like red and don’t like black. Red sells almost as well as a original black car. A color change will turn off both red and black lovers. You have a 68. Not all 68’s had the block stamped with vin. Just like a any 67 can be a “matching numbers” with the non original block. I think a cars value based on the numbers on the block is silly. The value is in the vin numbers only. Case in point. I was at the powder coasters the other day. Three of my Chevy friend were there. I had them powder coat a repop A12 air cleaner before I gave them a real one to do because the real one was worth $2500. They all laughed and said, “ man, you mopar guys are nuts with your matching number. I like my cheap Chevys. Everything I’ve got is a matching numbers SS. You can buy the stamps online”.
Anyway, all chargers are hot. They will be the last mopars to loose value in the future. Even if we have a “Mad Max” end of our society, they will still be sought after!

Here's how I would look at the situation. Do you plan on keeping and enjoying the cars for many years or do you plan on selling it in the not so distance future? If your going to keep it, do it how you want to. If you plan on selling it, painting it the original color MAY increase the value, but as hot as chargers are now, I'm not sure it really matters. Non # matching car I'd build how you want to. If it was a fully # matching car I'd try to keep it original.

This. Door jambs, engine compartment, trunk, underbody and fender wells, radiator support, etc. Unless you are doing a rotisserie restoration it is kind of a pain to do a color change right. And any red paint you miss will stick out like a sore thumb next to that fresh black paint. I wouldn't mess with it if the car was mine...

383 car. paint it any color you want.

It's better to keep your mouth shut and give the impression that you're stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

No. It’s a Tommy Chryco repop. It turned out very nice. I did not loose any detail on it at all. Not sure if I’ll do a real one or not.

I am not rich...but I get off my ass everyday to make sure I am not broke!

Can we get the Mexican cartels to help us with our supply chain issues? They don't seem to have any trouble getting stuff from one place to another.
