Illinois river is terrible. They'll jump right in your boat.

The video was actually filmed below Barkley Dam in the Cumberland river. Lake Barkley and KY Lake run side by side down into Tennessee and are joined on the north end by a short canal. The Tennessee and Cumberland rivers that feed each lake run south to north. I live about ten minutes west of both lakes and about five minutes from the Ohio river.

I crappie fish on both lakes and the asian carp have been a problem several years, the KY Department of Fish and Wildlife have been working to control them, it's their boat in the video. Several years ago I was in Lake Barkley idling around looking at my sonar and a carp about 15 pounds jumped in the boat. On his way in he hit the depth finder on the console and knocked the face plate off. It then proceeded to flop all over the boat before I could get it in a net, there was blood and slime all over the boat. For that little deed I left him on the bank for coons to eat.

I miss Crappie fishing on Kentucky lake in the spring. Find the right hole in the lake and you could catch two at a time with a double jig or minnows. I have not fished in so long now that I am afraid I forgot how.....

Todd, I don't know how many years it's been since you've been here but the lake has changed, as it's aged it has also cleared up a bunch. It seems the crappie are in the down side of their cycle now.

Really bad news for any body of water where they end up-

http://nyis.info/invasive_species/asian-carp/

"Silver and bighead carp are filter-feeders which feed on plankton (drifting animal, plant, or bacteria organisms that inhabit the open waters of waterbodies), with an apparent preference for bluegreen algae). Asian carp can dominate native fisheries in both abundance and in biomass. Bighead carp can reach 110 pounds, although 30 to 40 pounds is considered average (silver carp are generally smaller). Bighead carp can live over 20 years, maturing at about 7 years. Asian carp can consume 5 to 20 percent of their body weight per day. As most native fish feed on plankton during their larval and juvenile life stages (and some native fish remain planktivorous for life), this high level of feeding on plankton by Asian carp can have serious impacts on the stability of the food web, with bighead carp potentially outcompeting native fish while eliminating the main source of food for larval fish and native planktivorous fish".

Yes and from what I understand tasty too. There is a market in Asia for them and they are trying to develop a market here in the U.S.. There are commercial fishermen who fish for them but I don't think they bring much money.

There was a tournament on KY Lake in 2013, 21 teams caught about 83,000 pounds. The winning team had 28,670 pounds. I don't remember how many days they fished.

That's pretty much what I've heard, they love them in China but it's a different flavor than what Americans are used to.
I think it's supposed to be less fatty or something like that.

I'm not sure why it wouldn't be a great cat food here if nothing else.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

The have the Redneck fishing tournament in Bath Il. every year. Great turnout of people several dressed in costumes. Surprising how many girls love it. No poles or bait needed just a net and if you're smart a helmet. Heck national geographic covered it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redneck_Fishing_Tournament

It is used for that, and fertilizer. They plan to change the name for marketing purposes which can absolutely work.

Ever had Chilean Sea Bass off a menu? Its really Antarctic Toothfish but that doesn't sound tasty. (And its overfished as well)

There is an electric barrier "water fence" in the Chicago Sanitary Shipping canal in Romeoville, IL. Its designed to keep the carp from entering Lake Michigan.
