Does anyone on here own a car with a 3spd manual transmission? I have a 70 cuda convertible with a three speed . The problem is it sounds like an old army Jeep in first gear. As soon as you go to second gear the noise is gone. My guess it’s the way the gear is cut and unfortunately normal. Just looking for anyone who can confirm this.

That is not normal with an A-230 3-speed.

I drive mine as often as possible and it does not do that at all.

I owned a 71 RR 383 3spd.& first gear sounded like the other 2 normal, my guess is you have a bearing problem going on.

I have 2 or 3 of them laying around that I would sell real cheap. If not, have you considered swapping in an overdrive 4-speed? I have swapped in both O/D’s and standard 4- speeds. Easy swap. Jim.

If it is a 383 Cuda three speed- then this A230 is a close ratio, big bearing version. It is not all the same internals as an A230 from an LA or /6. The noise mentioned is likely a bearing or from the coutnershaft/needle bearing area. These items should be procurable.

I’d have to double check, but one of them was out of a 71 RoadRunner, 383 car that I had swapped a 4-speed into. The others, I can’t remember anymore. But yes, I’m sure Zumbrota, or someplace like that, would have parts. Jim.

Hard parts for the A230 are getting scarce, overhaul kits are easy to find but the only place I've found gears is on E-bay.

The only way I can send text is via my PC.

I do everything via letter or email, no phone.
