What other trucks-cars can I get a plastic tank off to use in a 79 short bed truck. Or even a steel tank, maybe even a Ford or Chevy? As long as i can get it to fit.

Not plastic, If I remember correctly from a previous thread......I think some guys are using the first generation Mustang. The tank has a seam/flange that measures the same as the frame rails. Filler tube straight out the back. I think it's only 18-20 gallons, not sure.

(some 78) plus 79 and 80 are only exact fit. 81-87 will work if you swap or modify the crossmember on the frame. Last year I played He11 finding one for my son's 80. It had come to him with a cracked original tank, jerry rig patched good enough for past owner to sell. I found one in a blink and miss it kind of junkyard about an hour from home. came out of a 79 long bed my son's is an 80 shortbed (and my kid's is a stepside besides) Went right in. the earlier 70s with the same body style are different, dont know how they'd mount into a 79-80 but the filler neck is much different, wraps around to the inside of the tank (towards the middle of the truck) MIGHT work if you get the filler neck and hose that goes between it and the tank, never tried that swap.

Thanks now I know someplace to look, first gen stang like in the sixty’s? Awhile back before I needed the tank there were two late 80s in the pick a part, might go back this weekend to see if they’re still there but the turnover rate is fast there. I tried a tank from a mini van but the filler is in a bad place. As long as it’s against the frame and away from drive shaft it’ll be ok, it’s a lil red so exhaust pipe is up front sorta, not out the back.
