I was looking at some old pictures from the 80's and I noticed that my buddy's 1970 RoadRunner had the lower part of the car painted black with a thin black strip above the blackout portion. This was a factory orange car with a black vinyl top and it had a hood stripe. Was the lower body black paint an option or was that added by someone? I don't think I've seen that paint treatment on another car so maybe it was added by a previous owner. Back in the 80's we just drove the car and never really thought about the paint scheme.

It was an original 440+6 car that he bought off a used car lot for $1500. Had a four speed, Dana and air grabber. Also had drum brakes up front which wasn't a good idea.......

69 GTXs had lower body blackout as an option but I have never seen such a thing on a 70 Roadrunner

painting the lower section "black" was an easy way to hide rust repair

The lower body blackout on his Road Runner looked a lot like the GTX example. Could've been added by a previous owner I suppose. The car had headers and Cragers so it wasn't stone stock.

Lower body blackout was never offered on a '68-'70 RR.
Obviously added later, and typical of a cheap rust "repair" or someone "dressing it up".
The lower body blackout was included on '69 GTXs.
