Holy crap...I've never paid any attention to these, even though I like sprints, but I just happened to turn on the Chili Bowl out of curiosity and haven't turned it off all week.
Non-stop, rough and tumble. I'm hooked.
And I usually ignore 4 cylinder race cars.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Haven’t been around the midgets since the late 70’s. I built my buddies engine back then, alcohol injected 4 cylinder Chevy II motor. It would pull the Volkswagens in the straights but then they dug in on the corners and pulled away again.
Low center of gravity with good power really made them hard to beat.

The guys in the midgets are certain less afraid of bumping, playing rough and muscling their way through. And of getting up side down. There were guys on their tops two or three times in a heat. They just roll them back over, push them off and send them to the back if they didn't break anything.
Or they tear it up, drag it to the pits, throw parts on it and be back out later as long as they didn't bend the chassis up too bad.
A number of NASCAR and sprint car guys there, just because of the prestige of the race.

. You mean you didn't watch Jeff Gordon battle Rich Vogler on ESPN's Thursday Night Thunder 40 years ago?
That was a treat

I don't follow dirt racing at all, not even a little bit. Except for the Chili Bowl. Since its local I have been lucky enough to score tickets several times over the years. That is some great racing and the Saturday A feature with the full field and 50 laps is intense.
