Hello all!

I just finished buttoning up the drivetrain in my 1974 Plymouth Valiant. 440 engine, a727, 8.75" rear Trutrac with 3.91s. Currently front disk & new 11" drums in the back.

I wanted to push it deeper into my garage while I wired it up but couldn't get it pushed backwards even with a friend helping! I feel kinda silly asking about such an odd little problem but it's bugging me and my brain is stumped. Any ideas? Here's some info and things I've tried:

-The rear is freshly rebuilt and doesn't have any gear oil in it (could this create enough friction to stop a reverse push?)
-Emergency brakes are disconnected (I can get the drums on and off, thus the brakes don't seem to be dragging too much)
-With the rear of the car off the ground, the wheels will turn backward and forward
-I've gotten under the car and manually shifted the linkage to check that the transmission was in the correct gear
-I hooked a tow strap to the back and gently pulled it backward with a truck. It rolled backward and the tires rotated

I can provide any other details if needed.

Thanks folks!

That is a trans thing. I believe it is somewhat normal.

Do both front tires rotate easily both ways? scope
If not fix that first.
Did you remove the residual valve from the master cylinder for the front disc brakes if the master cylinder was not a disc brake M.C.? If not do that next, if so look on wrench

A 727 takes a lot of effort to push backwards. My Duster is very difficult to push backwards. It rolls forward much easier than backwards. You could have some other issue too but it is probably normal. If you want to spend some time working on then remove the driveshaft and see how easy it rolls. If it rolls easily without a driveshaft then you know the problem is the trans. If it is still hard to roll without a driveshaft then you most likely have a sticky brake or a flat tire or some other such issue.

I have a TK0 (5 speed) and my 8-3/4 rebuild with new Power Loc unit resulted in a similar condition (but I don't think mine was in reverse-only). It seemed that until everything is worn-in (500 miles or so) that condition remained.

When I had my Dana rebuilt mine was hard to roll in both directions, after a few hundred miles it was easier.....still has resistance, which is normal, but it was easier and now I can do it alone.

I think that is pretty much normal. They always seem to be harder to push backwards than forward.

Yeah, it's normal to a point but with two guys pushing.....not so normal. 3.91 ears exacerbate the rolling resistance.

Thanks for all the ideas!
I think I’ll put it out of my mind for now and finish getting it wired and running. If things get weird then, I’ll come back and update!

About the discs: They were stock so the master is original too.

Funny thing is, when I push my Charger forward into the garage no resistance. But when I push the car backwards into
the garage and let go, the car goes forward about 3 feet. It's like a wind-up toy!

I've own many ,many Mopars with 727, 3 speed sticks and 4 speeds, the only one I can remember now pushing hard straight backwards was my old NHRA stocker 1963 Plymouth Belvedere 2 door sedan after I had Dave Smith at Pro Trans put a Mopar brand 2.77 helical cut low gear set in it and i change the 8 3/4 3rd member from a 4.88 ratio to a 4.56 ratio with a 30 spline spool on both shruggy
Before those two changes at the same time it push backwards fine, maybe a tiny bit back harder than forward but not a bunch different shruggy
