Some years ago I purchased a new "top quality" 1970 Barracuda gas tank for my car. I noticed a few years later when I went to install it that it did not have the vent tube on the right side. Was this a factory mistake or was there an application that called for no vent?

Thank you for your help.

California only cars in 1970 had an ECS emissions system with the special vented tank, gas cap, vapor return line, 3 nipple valve cover breather etc.

Cars destined to be sold elsewhere came with a standard gas tank.

The only 70 E-bodies that had a vented fuel tank were the ones built to be sold in CA with the Evaporation Control System (ECS). Cars sold elsewhere were non-ECS and had no vent. All E-bodies, regardless of where sold, came with ECS starting in 1971.

I’m thinking you accidentally bought a non ECS tank years ago.

Thank you for your replies, but I am still a little confused. My car was originally purchased in Florida and it had a single vent tube on the passenger side. The one I purchased years ago did not have this vent tube. I checked Ebay and I do not see a 1970 Barracuda gas tank without the one vent tube. So are the non ECS gas tanks void of this one small tube?

Thanks again.

Regular 1970 non-ECS cars should just have the one tube for the gas filler.

ECS cars, which are 1970 CA only, have the gas fill tube and the smaller vent tube in the trunk that has several rubber hoses that run from the nipples on the side of the gas tank up into the vent tube.

If you car is was not sold new in CA, and does not have the smaller vent tube in the trunk, then it's a non-ECS car and can use the regular fuel tank.

Some repop tanks came with no vent tube...If you need to add that 1 tube find the location, take a punch and send it through{ no drilling you need the material to go in}...Then either use your old line or make a new one and solder it in... I've done more than a few that way...You can buy the "S" shaped line going from the tank to the frame there's a stainless version out there...

Thank you. I would just as well use the tank without the vent tube. Would that cause any problems?

No problems just make sure you run a vented cap...And just keep in mind you have no provision for fuel expansion on a hot day other than climbing the neck and out the vented cap in a worst case scenario... Just don't overfill it for the summer..The 49 state single vent for 70 was routed inside the tank at the very top and exited on the top, right side just as the ECS versions minus the other tubes...So if the fuel got high enough it pushed through the tube and emptied into the frame rail ...Crude but effective... And would be an absolute nightmare for the tree huggers of 1970 let alone 2021... runaway

one thing to include about adding a vent tube hole.
while a tapered punch is absolutely required, you need a starter hole of 1/8-3/16" first, depending upon the size vent tube you are installing.
if you don't do that, your tank will only incur an awful dent or six before your punch pierces the tank wall.

I do not run the car in the summer because it does not have a/c and the temperatures are hot. I drive it when the weather is mild and usually only have 5 or 6 gallons of gas in the tank at any one time.

Thanks for the information.
