One last try.

Hey guys. I am still wondering if my factory N-Code 383; Cast date: octobre 1970; HP stamped; 4BBL ; HP Manifolds engine (300Horsepower) in my C-Body Plymouth Sport Fury is considered and named as "Super Commando" or not.

This site says yes : https://www.automobile-catalog.com/...p_super_commando_383_v8_torqueflite.html BUT i couldn´t confirm it with other sources.

It´s actually just about the right air cleaner lid / decal so lets not overrate this whole topic.

But maybe somebody knows for sure.....

Thanks

You may have better luck going over to cbodydrydock.com and asking.

If it's factory HP stamped it's a super commando. Dodge would call it magnum.

I generally don't like that site. Tries to do too much at once, with few if any expertise demonstrated. Feels something other than American too, which doesn't impart confidence.

Anyway, my impression is that the Super Commando was the HP engines. Since the 4bbl. 383 was reduced in compression in 1971, and since there was only one 383-4 for the year, I think Plymouth dropped the engine designation. JMHO.

But look at this:

https://www.npdlink.com/product/dec...r-cleaner-correct/173522/90170?year=1971

Is that a 1971 'Cuda 383 air cleaner decal? If it is, then there's your answer.

"Super Commando" was used on 4-bbl BB engines in the Plymouth brochures.
For the '69 Plymouths, for example, it's applied to both the 330HP 383 and 375hp 440.
The Road Runner's 383 was referred to as "Road Runner 383".
IIRC, that name started in the early '60s for the top BB engine option.
So the name has as much to do with marketing as anything, to denote the high-performance engines.

the question might be - did any 1971 c-bodies use a "pie tin"?

I remember some C bodies that had TNT on the pie pan. Maybe that was earlier.

Commando was the name given to the base 290 HP 383 2 bbl. The 330 hp version got the Super Commando moniker.

71 the same?

Well it seems not... 71 B Plymouth dealer catalog doesn't make mention to the 383 335Hp and no mention to any Commando denomination. So I guess they dropped the names and the HiPo version with it

My 66 New Yorker with the TNT package had the TNT pie pan, on a dual snorkel, that's if my old memory serves me.....
