Is it supposed to have a gasket or not?

I was always under the impression there was only sealer/no gasket was used on the 1969 Plymouth B body rear window.

You can imagine my surprise when, after 30 years of ownership I popped the back window out of my '69 GTX to find it installed with a gasket under it, but spacer blocks/sealer on top of it.

Was that a hacked installation/some slob's idea of a repair, or were any of them actually made that way?

My thinking: If it's supposed to have a gasket, it's a little odd that nobody sells one.

(I haven't got as far as checking glass date codes, but that might help explain part of it)

thanks

No moulded seal used. Butyl tape. I just did my 69 Charger and used the 3M brand 5/16 diameter.

They did use a gasket and I believe they're still available from a windshield installer. They only used spacer blocks for the gap at the bottom between the dutchman panel.

5/16 butyl. Press it firmly to the body, then set the glass on it . You will have to press the glass into the tape. You can see through the glass where it is adhering. Do it on a warm day. Have help, butyl is kind of like contact cement-you have one shot to set it right.
Napa. O'Reilly. On line.

No they did not use a molded rubber seal. Butyl is all they used on the rear. Front did use a molded rubber locking style seal.

THIS IS CORRECT. Butyl tape, no gasket. I guess the factory used 3/8" butyl tape. But you will NEVER get the moldings back on. That's why 5/16" is recommended. Yes the 3M kit comes with the spacer blocks. Its about 20 bucks at NAPA. make sure you get the 3M kit not the house brand kit.
