Much as I don’t trust the auction games, if I’m going to ever sell it I think I’ll have to list it in a Mecum auction. It used to be easy to sell cars I thought, I sold a number of cars in the 80s through early 2000’s, run a Trading Times ad and buyers would always call. My last 3 attempts over the last 10 years to sell cars have been complete busts, I ending up having to trade the other 2 cars in. I’ve resigned myself I’m unable to sell cars in this era!

You should try right now. If this car is going over 50, 70 for a v code in similar or better shape would seem within reach or close to it.

Not as strong as this. If he weren’t into games, he might catch a real buyer. “Whistling”

Nobody paid $60K for a repainted brown 340 Challenger with a blacked out engine compartment and incorrect seats I think it is a cool car with some great options. That said, the seller is being ridiculous- They started at $80K. You can buy two nice 340 Challengers for that or a V Code car in better condition. That car is going nowhere at that price.

For you guys that like bid histories, this one is some interesting reading. I’ve noticed a lot of times this guys stuff bids to just under the asking price he puts on other sites. Wonder why that would be?

Bummer it was shill bid, followed the first auction in December, thought it sold.
This is the first 4 speed formal roof car I have seen, all others have been automatics including mine.
Mine's got the wide chrome moulding as well, but it's an eye catching color combo, not dark bronze like this one.

Vin yes, Im not sure the fender tag codes are different

outward appearance the only difference is the SE emblem on the rear sail panel

1970 SE has it,,,,,,,,1971 formal roof car does not

They broke up the leather seats from it in 71. At least I think they were part of the SE package in 70. Accounts for the difference in it being called formal roof and not SE package, if I have that right.

Learned something new! I never realized they dropped the J*29 vin for 71.
I just hit up Hamtramck Historical, to see they had leather seats that year. So you could build an SE for 71 with 3 option codes.

Yeah I think you could probably get whatever interior you wanted .
My first was a 70 RT/SE and it had leather interior, my current ( and likely last ) is a 71 R/T Formal Roof car with orange and black "houndstooth" interior.

My '71 has the leather seats option (interestingly only the front seats are leather with that option, the back is vinyl, but to make up for that you got 2 extra ashtrays in the backseat along with the one in the console!), I am not a big leather fan, nor vinyl, but think houndstooth interior is cool!

My friend had a FJ6 sassy grass green 71 Challenger R/T, with a white top interior and side stripes that had those red and orange plad inserts on the seats. The interior was hideous with that color combination.

Why would someone order orange plaid seats with a sassy grass exterior? Obviously a factory mistake!
They had green plaid available.
I remember a Grand Spaulding Demon that used to be around this area, and was featured in MCG at that time, which was B5 blue with a red plaid houndstooth interior. Story on it, if not embellished by Wolf in his usual "how cool is that" writing style, was that it was an ordered car, but the person filling out the order sheet, or the factory, screwed up and that is why it ended up with the wrong interior, When the car arrived at Grand Spalding, the customer refused it due to the interior and it sat unsold for a while until someone finally bought it. Back in the day stories I've heard about Grand Spalding make me question that story, I would have thought they would have just found another Demon in their inventory with an appropriate interior and swapped interiors, then jacked up the price on the Demon they pirated the interior from due to their "upgrade", and sent the customer for the blue GSS Demon off on his way with the car he ordered.
But at any rate, it was an odd looking car being blue with a red plaid interior!

the '71 Dodge Challenger / Demon cloth inserts are "PLAID" not "HOUNDSTOOTH"

the 1971 trim guides were printed in error & had the wrong codes under the orange/red & black/white PLAID interiors for the Challenger & Demon
the corrected versions didn't help the issue with H5X9 / M1X9 representing the orange/red & H5XX / M1XX representing the black/white

for added confusion .....
the '71 Charger salt & pepper or checkerboard cloth inserts were coded:
D5XV for the black/orange & D5X9 for the black/white

so at Dodge for 1971, X9 cloth was red/orange in a E or A-body and X9 cloth was black/white in a B-body realcrazy there are purple, blue & green cars with the red/orange cloth insert seats eek

Wow, that would be hideous, even for my tastes , on an otherwise fantastic color combo.
I recently found someone that has the same orange/black interior on a GY3 car. A little more tolerable, but would have to get used to that I think.

Am familiar with that B5 Demon, 340 3 speed, was for sale at RK Motors for the longest time. Really liked it , but over-priced IMO .

And Dan, I knew you'd post because I said houndstooth, that's why I put it in quotes.
Plaid by my definition is in strictly vertical and horizontal pattern. The pattern in my interior is not, so my prerogative to call it what I want grin

I'm sure there was lots of confusion with how it was ordered back in the day.
