Before I scour the internet I thought I'd ask here first. Building a mild to factory 67 440 4-speed GTX and was thinking of using a 7-blade clutch fan vs a solid 7-blade fan. I think factory it would have had the clutch fan? but, what are the benefits of a clutch fan over a solid? or are there any really?
Thanks info all.

Hi Mike,

Gotta be a clutch fan every Time!
Solid fans are noisy and rob horsepower...

Most folks are going Ali rad and electric fans these days... penguin

Why not take a little more load off the engine with the clutch? There is no down side to it other than the initial cost.

If using mechanical fan then yes clutch is best , and more importantly a proper shroud

I DISAGREE!!! I love the sound of a noisy flex fan, that noise can also serve as a shift point indicator LOL

just stirthepota bit. LOL grin

CLUTCH all the way

At least in a B-body there's room for a fan clutch! scope
It's so tight on my 451 Dart that even the short Hayden 2947(?) doesn't fit.

So I went to Contour fans and a PWM controller. No problem stirthepot

Recently someone was telling me there are two different kinds of fan clutch’s? The kind you get from Hayden and the one you get from Tonys mopar parts? I forget what that person called each but they said they behaved completely differently. The one from Tonys will cool better. Anyone have an insight into what the differences were again? If any? Thanks guys.

Ive got the heavy duty short hayden version on my 67 GTX. It cooled better then the fixed fan. My vote is for the fan clutch.

There are thermostatic clutch fans that are temperature controlled and there are rpm controlled fans that limit fan speed.

^^^ Yup. Temp-controlled (engage at higher temps) typically have a coiled flat spring on them.
RPM-controlled typically don't have that spring, they're like the opposite of a torque converter.

I run thermal clutches on all my stuff and always have. When cold, they are very loose and then when the hotter air hits the spring, they get tighter. Non thermals are just the same amount of friction all the time. I also replace them every 3 or 4 years as they tend to loosen up with use. Especially on the Hemis that turn more Rs than the wedges. And because I run a cut down truck fan with big blades, I run a heavy duty or severe duty clutch.

Here are a couple of links that explain the difference better.

Damn it, now I'm feeling like I need to get one for my Power Wagon. I was fine without before this thread.

The old Mopar Performance manuals quoted an approximate 10 HP gain at higher RPM's for theclutch fan.
Pay attention to hood and cowl seals for cooling performance, BTW.

FFS's electric.Try ZERO horsepower loss. What is wrong with you people? shake_head

Throw 8 pounds of dead weight and 5 less hp in the scrap metal pile where it belongs: electric fans have been doing the job since the 80's.

Except for the HP to run the alternator to run the fan, no free rides out there.

Doubtful, the 340 isn't a 5.7L. More likely it's a SBC.

I dont worry about any wind noise from the fan. I run a 7 blade Chrysler steel fan no clutch with a clean good running rad with stroud and a 160 high flow state and mated water pump and housing. The hemi runs at 163 Deg. in any heat. If you are going to run the clutch on the fan buy new. .

I had a non-clutch seven blade fan on one of my '62's for a while. It was VERY noisy! At 50mph it sounded like a hurricane under the hood.
