Hey gang, I'm new to the durango game. I bought a 2001 r/t a while back as a daily and now that its cold I am learning that the defrost door is closed and will not open. All the other heat/air stuff works as it should. Cold air, heat, blower motor works great on all speeds but the door won't open. I know its probably an actuator but there are five of them, I believe. Do any of you know which one controls the defrost door or is there a way to open it manually? I can deal with no heat for now but not being able to see on the way to work is challenging. lol.
I have a factory shop manual on the way from eBay and picked up a Chiltons book at auto zone but it doesnt cover the issue. Also, no YouTube videos for an 01 that I can find. just trying to find out what I'm getting myself into. I know the earlier first gens are vacuum operated but mine is all electronically controlled.
Thanks in advance for any help.

If you have to take the whole thing out to fix it, it is a BIG.....but do-able job. I had to put a heater core in our 2004 Dakota, which should be the same thing. You have to drop the steering column down, and remove the whole dash to get it out. If you end up having to do that....I would strongly suggest replacing the heater core and AC evaporator core while it's apart. The controllers are all electric on mine, and I set the dash control to one setting (floor heat), took pics of everything and made a bunch of drawings and notes before taking the box apart. I put it back together so it matched up with drawings and pics, and it works perfect. Good luck to you!

Yeah, this is what I'm learning. What a pain in the ass. lol. I'm gonna try the actuator and see if that works. May have to bring a hair dryer into the truck on icy mornings......

Could be wrong, but I believe the pre-'03 is still vacuum.

My 01 SLT is electric as well...... while my 99 Dakota is vacuum.
On mine everything works except for I cant get floor heat. It'll burn your eyeballs out on any other setting. There is a Rube Goldberg linkage and dial setup that hooks to one of those actuators on teh driver side just above the floor hump, I have had apart 2-3 times. Clean the old grease (looks like Lubriplate white grease) out, relube and it all works for 2-3 times of switching it to "floor heat" mode then I gotta get in there and "help" the linkage move thru its range.

There is another company besides Heater Treater (I forget their name) that also makes "some" internal heater box parts for vehicles, they make some things that Heater Treater doesn't. On my Durango the blend door on the rear heat/AC broke, this other company had these parts where Heater Treater don't/
In fact I was on heater treater website a couple weeks ago and the only thing Dodge they had, was Ram 1500, 02 and up. Nothing for Dakota/Durango/older than 02 Ram.
