anything can be made to fit if a guy has enough fabrication skills ! up
seriously now. not having those columns in front of me to compare, i'll go out on a limb [of course with a running chainsaw biggrin] and say it's possible.
i'm "guessing" you can use the 76 shaft to install in the 68 column, but if i were doing this, i would just "collapse" the 68 shaft and use whatever splined coupling shell you need to connect the column shaft to the power box.
if i remember correctly, the power box is approximately 1 1/2" longer than the manual box.
all of the columns i have taken apart allow the shaft to collapse 8 or 9" in a crash, so there will still be enough "crash protection" [in my opinion] to "shorten" the shaft a little.
the plastic injection "pins" shear easy, and the rest of the plastic remains around the flat part of the shaft to support the two pieces.
use caution when tapping the shaft shorter, and measure carefully when deciding how much the shaft needs to be shortened.
i hope this "explanation" is clearer than any mud i may have caused.
you can do it ! i have faith in you !
please keep us updated.

What are you(or your friend) looking to do specifically? There are big differences between a 68 column and a 76. The 68 has no ignition switch on it. In 68, the ignition was on the dash. The ignition switch was added to the steering column in 1970. When the factory did that, the upper section of the column had to get larger to fit the extra parts inside.

that is correct.
however, without having the two columns [or similar] in front of me, i can't say anything can be interchanged.
with that said, the upper part of the shaft has machined area[s] for the steering wheel lock plate, so that part of the shaft has changed for sure.
it is also probable the shaft splines for the steering wheel may have changed, preventing the 68 steering wheel from fitting.

if i had these columns in front of me, i'm positive i could come up with a column that would fit the OP's power steering swap.
i can't say what i would use from the 76 column, if anything.

Well, I guess I better just get a 68 column and save a lot of issues. Dave
