What are the best replacement valves for the 440-1 heads. I was getting ready to pull the heads off my 440 drag motor and send them out for porting when I remembered there was a weird popping sound from the left header on cold starts the lest few times out. I figured it was a plug starting to foul since it cleared up after warm up and the car was still running consistent 6.26 @ 110 1/8th mile. It even ran a best ever in some really good air 6.11 @113mph. I ran a compression and leakdown test before pulling heads. All cylinders were 210-220psi compression except #7 only had 118psi. Ran leakdown on #7 and it had 85% through the exhaust. Checked lash and #7 had 0.010 less than the rest Pulled the header and couldn't believe what I was. The # 7 exhaust valve was cracked 3/4 the way around the stem I don't know How it stayed together. I feel VERY LUCKY!. I was told by one of the head porting services the valves Indy uses are not very good and that the would tulip and break with roller cam spring pressure. What are the best replacement valves, Ferrea,SI, or something else?

Wow! I had a set of the Indy 360-1's that developed tuliped valves as well.

I have always liked Fererra or Manley for stainless valves, or Victory or Del West for titanium

iagree up
AKA, God loves bow up grin
I've had several exhaust valves as well as other parts fail while racing, NOT GOOD shock
I'm sure your going to replace all of them including the intakes, correct up twocents
I owned and flew a small 4 seater airplane for 15 yrs, I had one exhaust valve spit out a inverted V shape out of it just as I level off at 9500 ft. above western AZ where there no airports nearby to land at, I reversed course back to Prescott, AZ where we had spent that weekend. That was the longest 85 miles I flew in that airplane in those 15 Yrs. shock

I was talking to Chuck at Best Machine the other day about some Indy heads and he says they buy the heads bare from Indy and put Ferrea valves in them. https://www.ferrea.com/

I thank God every day for all my blessings.
I'm leaning toward Ferrea Competition Plus valves. When I talked to Larry Smith he said some Manley's have been coming from China.

Mine are Ferra 2.25/1.81. 700+ passes. 7200 rpm 320/800 spring pressure. Lash is always good.

What's the opinions on what causes tulip fracture?
1. stem to head radius too small (but supposed to help low lift flow)
2. stem diameter too small (7mm)

Has anyone flow a head with 5/16" vs 7mm (.276") intakes?
