I am rebuilding my 4500 series carburetor. My question is there enough of material around and under it to install a later style bleeder screw. These are the two up on the top of the carb.

Thank you...Ted

Tap the holes that are on the metering block mating surface. High speed bleeds are direct tapped, idle bleeds are drilled, tapped and counter sunk. Search YouTube, there’s a video on it.

Or you could just drill and tap for 8-32, but only tap three or four threads deep.
Then just use brass 1/8" long setscrews and drill them yourself to the desired size. You can get 50 or 100 from McMaster-Carr for the price of one pretty air bleed, and not even have to countersink the hole scope
Worked fine on my 4780 carb, anyhow. wrench

I did my first one a couple of years before the “HP” 4500’s came out.

If you wanted adjustable air bleeds in a 4500...... you had to modify a stock body.

Man that carb looks great. What type of screw did you use on this?

Thanks.

8-32 x 3/32 brass set screw. They work and look great. Just drill to desired size with numbered drill bits.

Yes, I do all the come thru my hands, plenty of material to tap 10-32, the outer two are fine with set screws. If you want to use regular bleeds you have to offset mill the hole before tapping to allow enough room for the heads. Otherwise you can use headed bleeds in one of the two, setscrews in the other. On two circuit conversions I may do that and just plug the outside with a set screw. 10-32 x 3/16 brass from McMaster-Carr, tap 5.5 turns with a bottoming tap you can also get from McMaster. I use a spiral flute tap, they eject the material better.

when tapping small holes in cast items like carb bodies, especially shallow threads, i like to use form [roll] taps.
there is less chance of making the threads oversize with that type of tap. those are also available at mcmaster as well as other places.
however, these taps require a [slightly] larger hole than cut taps, so check a chart to make sure you use the correct size drill.
