Hello, picked up a Passon 5 speed this spring. Plan on putting it in my Challenger when it warms up here. Just curious who actually has one . And what you think of them, any issues, any tips? I remember hearing a story about then not staying in 4th. Is that a real issue with these? Thanks in advance.

I have one of the earliest ones in my '70 'Cuda with a 493" RB, scattershield and American Powertrain hydraulic TO kit. I love it. Be sure to use the correct recommended gear oil in it and break it in as recommended. I found that 4.10's with 28" tall rear tires are a great match.

1970 Plymouth 'Cuda #'s 440-6(block in storage)currently 493" 6 pack, Shaker, 5 speed Passon, 4.10's
1968 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible 408 Magnum EFI with 4 speed automatic overdrive, 3800 stall lock-up converter and 4.30's (closest thing to an automatic 5 speed going)

How long did you have to wait for it, or did you find a secret supply to buy from?

The one I installed went as close to factory as could be hoped. The only thing I remember needing to modify was the speedometer cable enters from the pass side. From the drivers seat the only give away its not an 833 is the shift pattern. Shifts exactly like a nice 833

I have one in my 6.1 Hemi 1969 Barracuda. I was #4 on the "list".. https://www.hemmings.com/stories/article/modernized-mopar-1969-plymouth-barracuda

Make sure you use a manual transmission GL4 oil and not GL5. Mine is a little notchy going into 3rd when cold but otherwise it works great.
HOWEVER, others have experienced significant problems https://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/threads/a855-5-speed.442999/

Well then, that's one expensive POS I can cross off my list. Shameful.

Wow. I read the whole thing. That guy had a lot of patience! So, anyway, what's the best overdrive manual trans out there not the "Passon A-855?" Cause, you know, I'm gonna pass-on it

I just ordered a Tremec TKO 600 kit for my '70 Charger. I guess I'll let you know how this works out.

I did a little research on the Passon 5-speed in 2017 and ended up passing on it. I ended up buying a TKO-600 from Liberty's Gear for my 65 D100 and did the entire set-up from pieces I pulled together. Everything went well and I really like the transmission. The most time consuming part of the set up for my application was getting the pedal and clutch arm ratios dialed-in to have the best engagement / disengagement at the pedal. I opted for an external hydraulic (pulling) slave cylinder on mine.

Absolutely up I've heard there is some "massaging" needed, no big deal there. The big appeal here was drop out an A-833, lift the A-855 in place and in a few hours you had overdrive drive

Did you get that "refurbished" one that GFI was advertising on their site a little while back? I thought about it, but I didn't know how I'd go about getting in my B-Body

I took the scenic route! smile Sorry, I drove northwest to Casper Wyoming. Loaded 2 transmissions in the back of my truck. And drove back southeast to get home.

I called him a couple of weeks back and was not impressed with his PP attitude over the phone. That in itself was enough for me. I know we're talking about a 5 spd here but my conversation was regarding a 4 spd. I have never been treated that way by Wayne at Brewers. twocents

Research on gear ratios and features like no cut install are easily decided in front of the computer but notchyness is something that is hard to get across on the internet. You must experience and feel it.

If this is a factor to you, like it is to RealWing. Get a T56 Magnum. Zero notchyness going on. It is not a straight bolt in but if quick shifting, smooth shifting, the highest power level capable and internal linkage are important to you, there is no other choice.

Wow, after reading about the Passon 5 speed issues I think I would have to pass on taking a chance with buying one. Good luck.
