Who makes a good roller chain that can handle a solid roller with a little spring load (600 lbs open) ? Has anyone used Rollmaster or IWIS chains? I been told they were the best but it appears that Mopar applications, especially undersizes are impossible to find.

Hughes engines may not list it but they should have them....

Best thing I have ever found for helping timing chains not stretch is to soak them in Redline 85-90 wt synthetic gear oil for several days before installing them. I also tap on them while they soak in a ziplock bag on their side to get the air bubbles to float off and allow more oil into the rollers. This has virtually eliminated chain stretch on a half dozen motors I've had.

I stumbled across it when I ran out of chainsaw bar & chain oil one spring. My chainsaw chains last 5 or 6 times as long with it.

i have used the 9 way adjustable Cloyes high dollar race sets on motors up to 860 Lbs. open pressure shifting at 7000+ RPM for hundreds of runs at the strip and 3,000 + hard street miles before having them break
Cloyes had issues on those upper gears for a while, they wouldn't fit under a stock cover, but I think they got that correct now

I would highly suggest a good American Company, Pro Gear. All I ever used, other than occasional Rollmaster set if I was out of ProGear stuff.

I had never soaked chains in the past until Monte Smith mentioned it on here one time Since they don't get any direct oiling they take most of the wear early on if they are not soaked in oil before install. I had never done that and soaking made total sense.

I don't mind paying for Quality parts but I'm cheap(mopar duh lol) in the sense I don't like to pay for rebranding of quality parts. When it comes to timing chains I have found that the ones Summit sells are the exact units that Comp Cams sells for about $40-50 cheaper. Just an FYI

Is there any indication on the Progear chain links as to the chain manufacture ? I would rather stay away from Rollon or DID chains.

I've used Rollmaster in a few engines, very good stuff.
One of them is a solid roller SB that sees 8,000 RPM.

Pro gear uses a Rolon chain. Made in india.

Because of not so great reviews on that chain I have a pro-gear set on the shelf I replaced with Rollmaster that uses German Iwis.

Even better is to soak em in oil in a frying pan and heat the oil to a few hundred degrees then the oil is impregnated into the metal.....Pettis Performance trick....

i would think the heat just allows the oil to soak between the rollers, links, and pins easier due to expansion between the parts.

Rolon makes two different grades of chain. What is referred to as the "gold" chain is just as good as the Iwis. The standard Rolon is the one with durability issues.

For what it's worth, I used Rollmasters on the last three engines I built, and keep two new ones on the shelf, but the ones on the shelf are quite dusty these days.

I’ve never had an issue with a Pro Gear chain. Yes, there are two versions.
Whats worth noting, is many “ chain failures” are not the chain at all. It’s a gear issue. Wearing gears, and especially, eccentricity. The chain is often blamed for another actual problem. The actual gear manufactures study this stuff quite extensively.

As I understand it, the Iwis chain manufactured for Rollmaster is unique as it's stretched at the component length rather than a bulk length of chain, per request of Rollmaster.

I do believe the Rolon gold chain is better than their standard chain, but from the research I've done, does not seem to be on the same level as the Iwis made for Rollmaster.

Just my opinion.

If someone wants to test a new Pro-gear/Rolon gold setup on a solid roller Hemi as I am putting together, let me know and I'll send you the one I have.

i was always under the impression heat [450-500 degrees ?] plus a pressure vessel of some sorts was needed to impregnate parts.

That may be true but I'm just repeating what one of the best engine builders on earth showed me years ago and I could be wrong on the temps cos it's been many years since I worked there.....
