U-Haul changes truck prices regularly, but Perry has noted the pattern over time. Checking online recently, he noted that trucks going from Phoenix to San Francisco were only $311, but going the other direction it cost $2,500 – roughly eight times more. He checked cities in other top destinations for Californians, including Texas, Washington and Nevada, and found all outbound rates to be exponentially higher than inbound ones.

The high demand and high prices have created perfect market conditions for exploitation. Scammers are cashing in.

I haven’t checked rates, but I did hear a couple months ago there was a 2 week wait to reserve a U Haul in Chicago. So many people wanting to move out it’s hard to get a truck!
If the governments in some of these states where they’ve succeeded in driving out residents by the droves want to increase revenue, maybe they should start some state and city moving services to compete against companies like U Haul, Penske and Mayflower? twocents

That is crazy high, but in a way it is simple logistics.

You don't make any money moving an empty truck--only a full one. So when 1-way moves are out of balance, rentable vehicles "pool" in certain areas and get scarce in others.

The only options they have is to have employees drive empty trucks back to the needed areas which is 100% money loser, or adjust prices to try to influence the trucks to "flow" where they are needed.

Yep, doesn't sound like a scam at all. Sounds like business!

Happens with cars too, just on a lesser scale. Places like Vegas may charge more to drive in and drop ff than pick up and go

The bad thing about this is the moving truck is full of the same political opinions they are running from. I live is a state they already did this to.

So let me guess, this was written by some snot nosed college graduate that wants his student loans forgjven. I suppose they procured a $100,000 government grant to research this too when anyone with two brain cells to rub together could have figured this out years ago for free.

So just curious, do Uhaul trucks in Cali have Prop65 warnings on them?

At 57yo, my next move, I'll fit everything I need in the bed of my pickup. Under the bed cover. Like the Beverly Hillbillies smile

Heck, appliances are junk in 5-10 years now. I don't buy high end furniture - would be cheaper to buy new than the hassle of moving it. I shop at Lands End and Carhart. 1/2 the stuff in my closet/dresser I don't wear anyway. I own one suit for weddings and funerals. Guess I'd take that.

Wife and I looked at a house a couple months back. I told the wife if we put in an offer I'd tell them I want all their furniture if they want to do the sale. Much nicer stuff that our Salvation Army rejects smile

I remember when the car rental companies in SO CA would pay us to drive cars from L.A., Long Beach and other large cities in SO CA to Palm Springs in the fall and again in the spring to drive them other places they wanted them in up
When I called around to reserve a large 24 ft. box van rated under 26,000 Lb. GVW, to move my shop stuff from SO CA to Oregon it was much cheaper to rent it for a week and drop it back off at the same place than it was to rent it one way to Bend, OR and ride home with my wife in our truck towing my 24 Ft Pace car trailer that we used to haul more shop and parts in shruggy
It, the box van, had a Cummins diesel motor in it with a automatic tranny and wasn't to bad on fuel, empty or loaded. I had to stop at all the commercial truck scales both ways, it weighed 24,890 Lbs. here in Oregon loaded shock. Oregon laws on having a class B license to drive commercial trucks is different than CA, I was barely legal here in Oregon at that weight shock
Penske had the best rates and where the easiest to deal with up
