Drive by a couple of times or more every year...

Used to when we lived out there. Myself, I've never understood the fascination with Dean. The movies he made we B level at best IMO, maybe it had to do with the era (mid 50's) rock and roll etc.

I've never been on that road but I've looked at the intersection on google maps and I can see how easy it would be for an accident. Basically a Y shaped intersection with two highways merging. The cars turning left have to cross in front of oncoming traffic. Pretty easy to miss a tiny roadster that is flying along towards you, especially if he didn't have his lights on.

I've never quite figured out his popularity, either.

I drive by where he was born everyday on my way home from work. His movies are rated pretty highly on Rotten Tomatoes so calling them "B" movies might be a little harsh.

Ranks Giant # 76 greatest of all time, Rebel without a cause is #98 -- two in top 100 seems pretty good to me, there has been lots of good movies made in the last 100 + years

It's a real shame he died so young, & in the beginning of a real bright career. Reminds me of the death of Same Kinneson - very similar.

Here is a little known fact for you movie buffs: You all know the movie Bullit (if you don´t then a part of your brain must be missing). The actor, Bill Hickman, who played the Charger driver was a very good friend of James Dean. He was the first person to get to the fatal accident because he was driving Dean´s other car with a trailer for the Porsche. Hickman was a stuntman in many a good movie like the Seven Ups.

That junction was not the same in 1950s when he had his accident there, I remember a large tree being in the pictures taken there back then. I think his car hit the tree also or maybe that was all they hit
I've driven around that area a bunch back in the mid 1990s doing my work for the phone company, I think remember that sign being there then, maybe not
I think they had driven from Hollywood up to Oxnard and then up towards Taft, all the roads back then were two lanes, no freeways like today

As I said IMO. Again IMO, I believe, and have seen way better movies than anything he did. . As far as the women, well OK, but looks don't make a good movie. A plot, directing and acting does. his lacked all 3, again IMO

i always never understood the attraction. maybe handsome guy? acting? nothing stands out! personal life,don't care. but became an icon, for whatever reason.

I tried to watch Rebel Without A Cause and didn't get through twenty minutes. It must be a generation thing, the one before mine.

Most movies made in that era are difficult to watch now. They are just way too slow. I even have a hard time watching some movies from the 80's that loved back then. Now when I watch them I see how cheap the sets were and how lousy the special effects are and stuff like that. Kind of like driving a 1970's car after you've gotten used to a new Lexus.

One thing about James Dean is how odd he was. First off he was really small. Something like 5'8" and 140 lbs. He also was super messy with dirty clothes, no shoes, greasy hair, etc. There are stories about him showing up at parties with dirty clothes and smelling bad. Of course he was really young at the time. It think he was still in his 20's when he was killed. Just a split second difference in timing at that intersection and he might have had a long career.

I'd rather watch an old movie than a new one. Typically 50-60s westerns or noir. Sometimes 1930s comedy or...also beats the heck out of watching the news...
