Tremec just announced a new version of the TKO 600. The new tranny is the Tremec TKX. It’s claim to fame is being more compact, shift limit of 7500, torque rating of 600ft/lbs continuous. No testing on E body yet but may not require cutting on tunnel. B & A body will require cutting for center shifter location. They had a video/call presentation today. You can view the presentation on Facebook.

oh looks like it could be pretty nice. wonder how much it will cost and if it would really fit in a mopar tunnel with much cutting up the torsion bar crossmember..

The New TREMEC TKX 5-Speed Is the Compact Transmission You’ve Been Waiting For!

Rockford, Tenn. Friday, Nov. 6, 2020

TREMEC® 5 and 6-speeds dominate the aftermarket as the premiere choice for strong, reliable and versatile transmissions. The Silver Sport Transmissions (SST) PerfectFit™ kit helped take the 5 and 6-speeds customization options to the next level, multiplying the two to three available shifter positions to well over 25 shifter positions and providing all the needed conversion components, cutting templates, sheet metal and instructions to help convert classic cars, trucks, 4WDs, and select imports into optimized, modern drivetrains. TREMEC’s latest 5-speed, the TKX, is a great option for classic car enthusiasts who need a compact, high-power capacity transmission.

The TKX’s rounded, compact case will eliminate cutting in most applications and minimize it in others. The bolt-in dimensions of the TKX are very similar to the TKO and 3550; the new TKX retains the same length, face to crossmember mount, and bellhousing mount dimensions. SST’s STX Shifters® and case modifications put the shifter exactly where it should be.

The multi-cone synchronizer design comes standard with carbon hybrid blocker rings and helps the TKX achieve an 7,500 rpm shift capacity. The TKX is strong with a 600 lb•ft torque rating in both gear sets.

The new TKX gearing options:

3.27, 1.98, 1.34, 1.00, 0.72
2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.00, 0.81 or 0.68

You can call Silver Sport Transmissions at 888-609-0092 for more information on the TKX or to place your order. Complete kits are available.

About Silver Sport Transmissions

Silver Sport Transmissions leads the aftermarket development of TREMEC transmission conversion kits for classic American cars, trucks, 4WD, and select imports. SST’s PerfectFit™ brand of conversion kits are found in more classic cars and trucks than any other brand. SST seeks to raise industry standards by emphasizing integrity, customer support, continuous development, and excellent products above all else.

Bottom photo appears to be for Mopar shifter location.

This could be really good if the price is reasonable.

I have a buddy with an early Impala and he is considering a switch from the factory T-10 to a five speed. It is a big project in one of those cars. Not sure if the TKX will help him with space or not, we'll have to take a look.

How is this any different from the other Tremec 5 speed they have offered for years? Those are supposed to be modified to fit the B chassis with no cutting except for the shifter hole.

The TKO is a very tall case, yes it fits (barely) in the 2nd and 3rd gen B bodies (I've done both), the TKO fits a bit better in the 3rd gen B bodies and 70-74 E bodies, however if you don't remove some of the excess casting ribs on the tail shaft and add a spacer to the tail shaft transmission mount the TKO install as delivered from most kit mfgs will have a profound downward driveline incline, with may cause problems with headers to suspension contact issues/carb to hood ram air systems, radiator/shroud/fan contact, etc, etc depending on your application/mods/etc....hopefully the new TKX eliminates fitment issues and solves driveline issues for the avg "bolt in" installer? I could live with a .68 OD offered on the TKX, although I like the .64 OD the TKO offers....the TKO offerings over the years had growing pains from the various kit mfgs, hopefully they have learned and applied that to the TKX offerings as I'd be interested in installing one of these

Mike

I have to wonder how relevant something like this is given all the problems and complaints over the years?

By now, 6 speeds from Challengers are affordable and better?

I finished a TKO installation in my '70 Charger last month. I could have bought the TKX but the benefits it provided did not appeal to me. I got a great deal on my kit.
I went close ratio with the .64 Overdrive. THIS changed the feel of the car dramatically. Cruising at freeway speeds, the car is quieter, smoother, no vibrations....it is so much easier to drive fast. The 500 mile break in sucks though.
I had to cut the trans tunnel to make room for the top of the trans but SST provides a template and a patch panel. This was the only 5 speed swap that I have ever done and it went well. I wrote a multi page thread about the install at FBBO.

Because years in the market with feedback from garages, installers and buyers has led to changes and improvements perhaps. Rounding the case, changing mount angles, altered shifter position, improving shift capability...sounds like they have been listening to complaints of previous models and rather than change an existing model, released a new version.
