I used a regular 100 lb psi gauge on my sending unit port & it flutters quite abit. do oil psi gauges have a dampener to soften this & this flutter is normal with a generic gauge? thank you for your time

Most of the stock and after market manual automotive oil pressure gauge have a very small hole in the inlet side on the back of the gauge, does yours? scope
I've use to use 1/4 I.D. lines to fed my manual oil pressure gauges in my old race cars, they reacted like a tach up scope
NHRA ban them, the larger I.D. lines, a long time ago whiney

it is still on there but I will check it & it has to come off to put the new OE sender on (old one was shot) & it is a grocery getter so I should be OK with just a light for the time being. It was scaring me as the light would come on randomly eek so I put the gauge on there that I had on hand & it turned out the OE sender was bad but I did see all the fluttering. Thanks Cab

The gauge is talking to you about the varying oil pressure issue, FIX IT first twocents scope

what I gathered from your first post is that if the gauge does not have the small hole that fluttering is normal. right or wrong? I wont know until I pull it.

Do you have another gauge you can try? Sometimes gauges go bad.

I've seen mechanical gauges do all sorts of weird things. Flutter, read only partial pressure, read super slow, etc. I'm not sure what all the failure modes are but I've seen more than my share of them.

Sounds like a person needs to use a quality one, no junk

The gauge damper is called a snubber. Without one it'll look like it has parkinsons

it was jumping wildly over a 10-15 psi range & it has a good sized inlet

Try an electric oil pressure gauge if you have access to one.

funny . mine started doing this a about 8 weeks ago . I use an Autometer only about 18 months old . I have a -6 line . Tried oil change ,then a different filter no change , opened filter no jewellry . Still has plenty pressure just the flutter .

Don't know if this applies, but everytime I've seen a bouncing/ fluttering oil pressure gauge, it was due to a rod bearing going away??

hello if you are using the copper line for the gage an old trick is to put a couple loops in the line?

. Yep. I do that. Learned that trick working on airplane engines.
