No tires mounted. Will be using a factory color, in my case F8, which I can have mixed and put into a rattle can.

So........How's this sound ?

Sandblast
Clean / wipe down
Etching primer, wait 60 min
Epoxy primer, wait 60 min.
Color coat, maybe several coats, each coat while previous coat is still tacky.
Wait 24-48 hours
Rattle can clearcoat

Assuming I can spray with no runs, my goal is mostly a semi-durable finish, that should look "OK".
Car will never see snow/salt, hopefully not even rain.

I would powdercoat, but I don't think you can get autobody color-matching powder.

Why the etching primer? I think epoxy will take care of it.

Sandblasting media won't get down in the seams. I would get 80 grit and sand the seams to bare metal, or put clay on the ends of the 4 joints and pour a little evaporust down in each seam to get all the rust out before blasting. After blasting expect to have to dig out stuck media particles.

Get a small paint brush from an art store and paint primer down in the seams. Then before you paint brush a little paint down in the seams too. The first place they will rust is the seams so if you get those clean and sealed up your better off.

2 part filler or JB weld any ugly gouge marks in the wheels.

To get the paint smooth sand the orange peel out of the epoxy primer with 600 grit before painting that way your not stacking orange peel on orange peel. It does make a difference if you want them super nice. You can paint over the epoxy days later so no need to worry about that part.

Tack rag before painting.

Hello Neil,
Sounds like good advice, I only know what I've read on the internet, so I am an internet expert.
I thought bare metal had to be etch primed though; if not, one less step.

I'm not a painter, but I have been using epoxy over bare metal on small parts myself for awhile now. The PPG paint store here told me it was fine to do it that way. shruggy

no etch primer on sandblasted metal. just epoxy and paint. IMO blow dust off ue a tack rag in wheels then put at least 2 coats epoxy on. remember you need to fill the sandblasted metal profile or you will have the tips of the profile barely covered and can have paint issues later,
