I'm freshening the original 318 in my 74 2wd half ton (256k) and I'm considering installing a dual plane intake,4bbl, and simple dual exhaust with the stock manifolds, I know headers would help but I just don't want to deal with the PIA factor. So...my question is cam suggestions for this combo, just looking for something with a little to no lope, and more low rpm torque...any experience/suggestions welcome, thanks up

Before I went 360 in my '82 Ramcharger I used 360 4bbl heads and stock 360 cam in the 318, it worked well. I also used Doug Thorley tri Y's 114Y, awesome headers, no more trouble than manifolds. I'd also look at stock 340 cams if you want a little more.

Thanks for the tips, dropping the block and crank off at the machine shop tomorrow to see what they need, then I'll go from there. I may have some 360 heads out in the deep recesses of the shed, have to go treasure hunting... up

I just had my 318 rebuilt for my 1968 D100 with 4-speed and I really like the cam that Comp recommended (installed):

https://www.compcams.com/xtreme-energy-206-212-hydraulic-flat-cam-for-chrysler-273-360.html

Xtreme Energy™ 206/212 Hydraulic Flat Tappet Cam for Chrysler 273-360. Very strong torque, excellent mileage and has a smooth idle.

Here is a moparts thread that helped me lean toward those lift numbers:

https://board.moparts.org/ubbthread...4/re-help-with-cam-selection-on-318.html

I am running the Edelbrock LD4B aluminum intake/600 CFM carter carb and stock iron manifolds, with dual 2-1/4" exhaust with no crossover pipe. I am very happy with my choices which keeps it appearing mostly stock with a bit more power but not so loud sound. I am running the long body Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers (2-1/4" in/out)

We just finished up a restoration on a W200, and ended up with the Summit Racing 6901 camshaft & Lunati lifters (buy 'cam only' and purchase your own GOOD lifters). Now, in saying that, you don't need to go with this camshaft, I would recommend one with similar specifications, around .450" lift & 215-225* duration, 110-114 LSA.

Engine is a 77' 318 w/ Holley 4160 carburetor (600), Edelbrock Performer manifold, OEM heads, longtube headers (1 5/8" - 2.5" collector), and 2.5" exhaust w/ x-pipe to 3" single with Cherry Bomb Extreme (single chamber) muffler. Idle quality is very smooth, even with the factory converter it doesn't drag it too far down going into gear. Light amount of lope while cold, as you would expect with a classic 'HP' sound, not really noticeable when warm. It's not too aggressive, but goes along with the truck fairly well, no one will know it's just a 318, it 'sounds' like a 440.

What I was most surprised of was the tune. I run a Wideband AFR gauge on all my setups, and with this combination, the 'box stock' Holley with no adjustments was near perfect. 15:1 AFR while cruise, drops down into the 12-13 AFR range with even light WOT, with no hesitation or bogs. I'm stating this because sometimes, tuning with even a slightly more aggressive camshaft can be tough! If you're running a similar combination, you should be perfectly fine.

Like Wally posted, all of the camshafts we are going to recommend are somewhat in the same range. Just make sure you don't use inexpensive lifters, go with a company that either produces them themselves or has a great track record.

myself with all my daily driver trucks I like the Hughes whiplash line of cams flat tappet or roller cams.

I just installed my 5.2 roller whiplash/comp 901-16 springs into my 360 headed 318 added RPM Air-Gap intake/625cfm carter afb/1 5/8" headers 2.5 duels/2.5 in/out magnaflow muffs/727 CRT/TF-2 VB stock HS-TC-non lock up auto trans/3.23 gears.

I did add MrGasket mech advance springs to points dist so advance is all in by 1800rpm set timing full advance @32*

jetted carb 1 stage richer on primary and 3 stage richer on 2ndary

now the old 85 stepside gets to stepping in traffic. idles 500rpm in gear at the line with a slight bump, pulls right off with light throttle in traffic, and is really a nice daily driver.

now my 440 whiplash is another story. it is nasty sounding, very choppy idle and is a beast when getting on it BUT it really does daily drive in traffic rather well.

once I locked the dist mech advance to full advance and dialed the timing to 32*-34* it will idle 25mph 3rd gear through town sounding like a dragster and smooth's right out about 1800rpm and cruz 45-55mph and has a big passing gear

all with a stock MH 440 cam/spring swap and a stock 727 low stall truck TC 2.76 gear 29x15x15 M/Ts the 3.23 are sweet and the 3.91 are even better but the 4000lbs beast will cruz like a big old Chrysler 4-door with those 2.76 down the interstate with unlimited top end. but sounds like a dragster idling around town.. the 3" duels/muffs might have a lot to do about that sound being so nasty.

I vote for the whiplash line of cams. my 0.02$
