Trying go get parts together for small block build. I’m shooting for 600 n/a and adding nitrous. Or may do blower
It was suggested to me by my builder that I try to find an R3 block.

Your direction is appreciated !

Think those were discontinued years ago along with a lot of other Mopar small block race parts. They show up for sale on Ebay occasionally. They made those in numerous deck heights, lifter angles, etc so you have to pay attention.

If you go to Hughes Engines website you can get a Ritter block that fills the R3 block void.

Really depends on what you’re goals are.... been some pretty bad builds in the last year and a half using the newer Ritter block.

What Heads? 48 degree? 59 degree? The possibilities are vast

I used a Mopar 340 resto block a few years ago to build a 427. That was a very nice engine. It cost some bucks to build and it was heavy, but it sure hauled the mail.

From what I hear the new blocks are good, but like any block should be checked out closely by a competent machine shop.

I have heard one report of a new block with a problem but I have not heard if Ritter made it right or not. Ritter was supposed to look at it.

Lots of reports of new blocks without issues that have made a ton of power.

I find myself in a situation of asking for something I don't know anything about, which I try to avoid. But it looks like it's complicated with different deck heights, lifter angles, cooling and oiling is different - and I don't' know what else. I had no idea and was just thinking it was a stouter version of the LA. I'll take any advice I can get, but maybe a cross drilled main cap LA engine would work fine. I understand pay- to- play but at this stage in my life if it's too complicated I'll lose interest. This is not an engine I will beat on pass after pass at the track but maybe a few "street outlaw" kinda races but mostly it will be street driven and in a '70 Duster

I have an R1 block in my drag car (avatar) and it's much beefier around the crank than the stock 340/360.
I think the resto block has most of those features but is the production deck height & 59-degree arrangement.

Aftermarket blocks for the SB Mopar is a complete minefield for the uninformed. You'll need to educate yourself and even then you might get stuck with a worthless block. For your application you should just find an early 360 block. Many of the early 360 blocks had extra thick cylinder walls. I sold a couple of early 360 blocks that were over 0.200 thick in the walls.

I agree with you 100% ! My first inclination was to get an early 360 as you said but I haven't had much luck with that either.

Even early blocks are a crap shoot. I used a 72 model 360 for my 408 street/strip build in my 69 Dart, it ran 6.57 @ 104 and change in the 1/8 on pump 93. After five years I pulled it to freshen it up, the cam bearings and main bearings showed signs of block flex. I lucked out and didn't bust a cylinder and ruin a bunch of parts. Luckily I found and bought a complete but apart Indy headed R1 block engine. IIRC the R1 is around 60# heavier than a production block.

600 hp on the motor with nitrous and or a blower on top of that? I think an aftermarket block would be better.
