Looking at shifters that have the shifter cable that enter from the rear of the trans. I know the turbo action and PPP shifters can do this, but is there any other shifters like this? Trans is a 727.

Winters, Fairbanks and Turbo Action are the same basic shifter for Mopar 727 trannies, all 3 are good units that work well up

I’ll object..... Perhaps when I make my “pinion snubbers and purple shafts” moparguy t-shirts I’ll include this fine piece of mopar-lore to it.

Errant 1-3 shifts... mine started making the 1-2 shift all by itself when we started launching hard. It relies on the rooster comb detents on the valve body to retain shift position.

We haven’t had a rousing shifter debate in awhile so let’s get this party started!

Thankfully there were enough on this old bandwagon to garner me a decent sell price. PPP FOR THE WIN!

I have a T/A and am also less than in love with it. IIRC, J-Body gave me the secret to not making a 1-3 shift.

I have a PPP I have never mounted in anything yet. I ordered it off of PPP's own website and it is a mess. The cable exits the rear of the shifter, but goes in the front of the trans. It also has a backwards shift pattern. Park is all the way back and you push forward to shift. I tried to trade it in at PPP and they refused.

I would get ahold of a Ben (?) Holt (Holt racecars) and see what he could do Slant.... Many seem to have success dealing through him on getting shifters parts etc. I agree that there seems to be some secret society surrounding ordering their shifters, and the amount of options they have can make your head explode. I was going through the process when lightning strike odds presented me with a used one... reverse pattern, clean N, rear exit at shifter, rear entry at Trans, air shift. After using it for many years now I’d gladly pay full pop for one.

I had Hurst qsticks in everything for years and really like them.
I have had a TA shifter in my current car for 4 years now. Have never missed a shift with it.
That said, i do take a little extra care with it. I just put my finger tips on it after i stage and keep them there, and when i make the 1/2 shift just tap it. Then grab it to make the 2/3 shift.
Its just falling into a habit and repeating it every time is the key. I have come to actually like it. The command center is nice for my switches and make for a tidy, unclustered area around the shifter.

PPP is the best way to go especially if its a hard leaving fast car.

Wish I never changed out my turbo action shifter.
If you have the correct gate, you will never have a problem.
IIRC, They are front exit cables.

I tried Holt, unfortunately since I didn't buy it there they couldn't help. This one will probably end up in my Valiant. I am sure it will be fine once I get used to it.

Fab a bell crank and mount it on the left rear tab of the case just in front of the tail housing. Now the direction of the cable action is reversed. Any front exit cable can now function entering at the rear of the trans. The Turbo Action is prone to 1-3 shifts. Never liked it. Actually the factory slap stick and linkage works very well. The pattern can be reversed with the piece from CRT.

I want to understand this going from first to third thingy. Are you saying the shifter goes from 1-2 but the lever on trans is going from 1-3? Or is it driver error and you’re just pulling it over past the detent

What I “learned” in my TA days was that if you launched and went to make the 1-2 by “pulling” the lever.... you could drag it past the detent and end up in 3rd.... pretty common actually. I found it best to “slap” on the 1-2 as the lever would move over to the right in prep for the 2-3. I had both gates for my shifter as I used it with my clean N t-brake briefly. The deal breaker was after we put the W8 in and on the test passes it would go 1-2 on the hit.... now when your shaking down a new combo your mind is in a million different directions I didn’t figure out what the H was going on until the 3rd pass when I watched the dang thing go 1-2 when I let go of the t-brake laugh2.

I actually took my valve body out and shimmed the ball and filed on the rooster comb to make it harder to move between the detents..... but the PPP fell into my lap so we ran with it.

I have a B&M ratchet shifter on mine (the mega shifter I believe) and it does what you are looking for (rear entry)

I see, my car never left that hard for that to happen. I had an electric shift, fist to second went fine, had to hold the lever over to shift third

I found out the hard way to not leave my hand on the shifter handle with me arm relax on one of my old bracket car that ran high tens, my hand flew off the shifter handle on the first launch on that car and hit the roll cage hard whiney
Next was the G force moving my arm back making me short shift it out of 1st gear when I stiffen up my arm before launching that car realcrazy
I finally learned to stiffen up my arm and hand so the G force wouldn't make me screw up the shifts up scopeshruggy
On the early Winters and Fairbank shifters I learn to push the shifter lever over towards the passenger side of the car on the 1-2 shift so it wouldn't slide directly into 3rd. gear up
