While tearing down my carb for a rebuild, I notice what appears to be oil. Not a lot, but very sticky/tacky and dark brown. This carb sat for over 5 years from the last start up with ethanol gas.

Don't believe it is oil, but a varnish residue from the old gas.

This could be reversion and maybe a valley pan leak

Could be from the PCV circuit, but based on the sticky comment I'd think gas myself. What's it smell like?

In the float bowl? If so, it would seem hard for engine oil to end up there on a running engine. Besides, I have seen that kind of varnish/residue before in carbs that have sat with fuel in them. Top end cleaner is about the best stuff I have found to clean up that mess. Sometimes it's called de-carbon, sometimes even tune-up-in-a-can. But it is the only stuff that my outboard service schools would recommend for carb cleaning and it is still the only thing I use on carbs. No carburetor cleaner, it's just too harsh.

Master, again and still

in the float bowls, it's varnish/residue from the old gas.
looking down through the venturi's, it more than likely is a combination of gas residue and reversion particles.

Is this in the throttle bores and venturi or inside the fuel bowls ?
