The mopar 383 6 pack intake does not have enough runner volume The 440 is just right The mod man has no velocity Uumm....what happens to the runner volume when you cut an inch in length off the head? The head volume and runner volume cannot(well, “should not”) be looked at separately. It is the total runner volume from the manifold plenum to the intake valve as a unit that should be considered.

I disagree there is more than enough material on the cast in spacer of the head to cut The intake does not have enough I know I need a total of 1 inch but I was just wondering if anybody has done it Just a word of advice, you have at least four guys in this thread that do this for a living and have written books on engine building. They are THE go to guys on big block Mopars. Before you cut up a $2700 set of heads and wind up with junk, you may want to listen to what they say and buy a low deck intake that works and fits correctly.

The mopar 383 6 pack intake does not have enough runner volume The 440 is just right The mod man has no velocity I bought and used a Eddy low deck dual plane six pack intake on the 400 stroker motor I built for my old pump gas Duster to race the black guys in L.A. CA on the street for money, that motor made 612 HP at 5500 RPM on CA pump swill in 2003, it made 644 Ft. Lb. peak torque at 4500 RPM, it had a solid roller Comp Cams with 260 degrees @ .050 on the intake lobes with .420 lobe lift 266 @ .050 on the exhaust lobes, it was ground on a 108 LSA and I installed it at 106 ILC. It had a set of slightly modified stock set of 1970 440 six pack carbs for a CA car with a automatic tranny, best run was right at 10.10 at 128.+ MPH corked up with the six pack pack set up with the air cleaner on and with me in the car weighing 3450 Lbs. That stupid motor would run faster in the car shifting it at 7000 RPM than shifting it at 5000, 5500,6000, or 6500 RPM Theory is one thing and real world results may not be what the theory says That was one of those motors, don't sweat the runner volume and you can have it acid ported to increase the volume Put it together now and go race it, if it needs fixing do that later

You will ruin those heads doing that. For one, taking about half an inch of the intake face will cut in to the valve cover rail. Secondly, how is it going to change the intake port shape? If you ever decide to put those heads on an RB block, you're making spacers. If I was so dead set on using the intake manifold, I'd cut the flanges off the intake and machine and weld on new flanges.
But, it's your money, do what you makes you happy.
I have attached a couple of pics, I don't have an account to host them. They are of a Trickflow 270 head (after I machined them for Jesel rockers) and on a low deck block.

I have been trusting the word of the guys that tell you not to cut the heads for over twenty years and they have NEVER steered me wrong. Just the opposite. If they say it can't be done, it is for a reason. I don't do my own machine work, but know you will have to cut MORE THAN .840 material off the head and intake combined to come close! Measure through an intake bolt hole on a 270 head and you will see there may not even be that much material to start with. This reminds me of the cowboy that jumped into a cactus patch. When rescued he was asked what the heck did you do that for? He answered, well, it seemed like a good idea at the time! Sometimes its' just better to trust others than our own ideas.

The Modman intakes remind me of the early Eddy Street Tunnel cross ram intakes, lots of plenum volume. Some motors like them and some don't I had a racer friend who ended up with a Indy M.W. port mod man intake with the dual inline top, he ran it on his Indy SR M.W. headed bracket motor with dual inline Edlebrock 750 Competition series carbs, he love it but it was a drag race only car, not a street and strip car. He had ran the car,19634 Dodge 330 two door sedan Max wedge clone car, with a stock Mopar cross ram with the Indy SR M.W. port size intake ports on it for years and then was offered the Indy mod man intake to try, he liked it a bunch and kept it
