What do you guys recommend to support the engine in the car when you remove the transmission? You can't just let the engine hang without some sort of support. So how do you support the back of the engine with the transmission taken out? I did a search and found nothing.

I slip a short piece of 1x4 wood b/t the oil pan and drag link.

If you have stock style motor mounts and the exhaust system is still on the car, you don't really need to support it.

I have seen several home built versions. I have also done the same with a 2x4 and a ratchet strap. But the last time I pulled the trans in my car I simply put a small bottle jack under the right rear corner of the block. Worked great and it was somewhat adjustable from under the car.

For short term I have used all these options.

For long term I have placed a piece of angle iron across the T bars and put another couple pieces from the rear block bolt holes down to the first piece. MAKE SURE YOU PROTECT THE TORSION BARS. A scratch on the Torsion bars can lead to failure.
I wrap the bar with rubber hose and clamp it with hose clamps. I then use U bolts around the hose to bolt the angle Iron to the Tbars.

A Piece of Angle Iron attached to the tbars also holds up the transmission very nicely when in storage without an engine too.

2x4 across engine bay with straps holding back of engine up. Use towels, etc to protect painted surfaces.

I built my own engine support fixture. You can buy or make a fixture without much trouble.

But the OP wants to know how to hold up the rear of the engine when the transmission is removed
That fixture looks nice but it would twist and allow the flywheel end to sag

Yes, the person would have to be smart enough to install it on the correct end of the engine.

My big-block does not have water pump ports on the rear of the engine

It wouldn't be a problem for me.

I think I'll try supporting the engine from above like AndyF, crackedback and GoMango suggested.

I use a ratchet strap between the torsion bars and a chunk of wood under the oil pan.

I like that one. Simple Easy and you can still close the hood.

That's a good one, Bobby! Will have to remember it. Good if you need to move the car with the transmission out.

I usually leave the jack or a block of wood under the back of it to hold it up.
