No block mods are needed for a 505 as long as you follow the plan laid out above. 4.250 crank with Chevy 2.200 rod journals. Then you use 7.100 long BB Chevy rods and a matching piston. If you buy the correct parts it goes together very easily. Stock oil pans clear, a windage tray will clear, the stock oil pump pickup will clear. If you stray off the path then you might have clearance issues.

My 69 GTX clone is a 505. I went with TrickFlow 270 heads and a good roller. Motor not yet installed, but it made 713 hp/709 torque on the dyno. I am looking to run low 10's and will be street driven Has a gear vendor OD.

If you have any info that would be great. Skip White in Tennessee sells complete kits for Ford and chevy that may even be the way to go.
I Bought an Eagle crank and rods for less than 1200 last thanksgiving from Summit on sale. 4.25 crank 7.1 rod saved almost 200 bucks. Icon 842 from 440 source 600 bucks. Had the machine shop source rings and bearings and assemble. 4500 in the complete shortblock less camshaft.

I think he was refering to the necessary modifications to a factory 440 crank to use in a 400 block. Turning mains and reducing counter weights?

I have the same combination going together, waiting on bearings, they've been backordered forever.
I went with trickflow 270's and Indy dual plane.

I'm using standard port Indy Ezs prepped by Dwayne. Probably go with a solid roller. Pump gas low maintenence. Not looking for max hp. I have a collection of 3 intakes An M1, Torker II, TM7. I'd like to find An SD. Its going in an A body so it should interesting.

Yeah we've built a handful of pump gas 505 engines with the TF270 heads and they always end up right in the low 700 range with a street roller type of cam. Higher compression and a more aggressive cam they'll go 750+ hp, but street builds are usually right at the 700 mark. An honest 700 hp is a bit scary in a street car! I rode with a customer in his B body and felt happy to get back to the shop! That car would pick up and move sideways when he rolled into the throttle.

And remember - the TrickFlow 270's were right out of the box untouched. They were inspected. I have around $2400 in the heads complete with valves and springs.

open to forced induction? You can trade a bunch of complexities....for some different complexities, but have a very mild setup in comparison.

EZ heads work okay once they have been touched up. Did you leave them standard port or are they the MW port size?

That's the great part of these. Very little maintenance if you go hydraulic roller. Plug checks and oil changes for me.

They are standard port because I have 3 standard port intakes. I bought these thru PRH. So they have good prep.

So you would recommend a hydraulic over a solid roller. What lifters do you use?

That all depends on what you are using it for. I used Howards hydraulic roller cam and lifters. Over 7000 miles so far and no issues.

Man I just not sold on hydraulic rollers , there is just to much going on there with lifter bleed off ,pumping up, float, and plunger stick at higher rims. Solids are consistent and lighter.
Enlighten me to what I'm missing here.

Nothing and I agree with you. Been running and racing with an Isky .680-.660 276-281 roller for longer than I can remember but it has nice street/strip lobes which are easy on valve springs only needing to change em twice but still run 9's or low 6's 'no problem and is tame as a kitten till you hammer the loud peddle. And now with a t-ram it's actually more docile and sounds like I lost a bit of duration so the big thing is lobe design no doubt and checking/setting lash a few times a year......Go for it....

I agree with Dom. Not gonna run 9's with a hydraulic lifter, not even low 10's with a 511. I'm using a solid flat tappet and going 10 O's with a street/strip 511. I would use a solid roller and good quality rocker for very little maintenance.
