I am looking at a 1979 Lil Red and have a couple of questions. It is suppose to be all original unrestored. One thing I am wondering is if the original wood floors were painted? On this one it is. Also was their originally speakers cut into the doors and if so what did they look like, a picture would be great. It has some original paper work with it and one of them is a Realistic Speaker page that I can see in the pictures. So I am guessing they have been changed, the speaker look to be square and a gray color. It also looks like it has a Tuff wheel and I thought I read that it was only a 1978 thing but then I see reference that maybe early 79 had them also.

The bed wood was painted red like the truck from factory. My 79 has the original tuff style wheel, as for the speakers the grille covers are rectangular and molded in the red color, they have kind of a slot grille pattern to them.

Here is a picture of what I can see of the speaker. My fear is that they have been cut out and are not the original size any more.

Wood bed floor was painted. They changed from the tuff wheel to what people called the omni one partway thru the year.
Speakers always seem to be a gamble if the holes have been hacked out or not. Mine have been changed too but I don't know how much they bastardized the doors to make them fit.
It's hard to tell from your pic but that speaker looks kinda big.

Bed floors were painted red when new. Late 79's (like mine) had the Omni (and other fwd's) Sport wheel. Those speakers are not o.e. Original door speakers were hidden behind a rectangular plastic grille - my speaker grilles are red & match my red interior - I can't say if the black interior trucks had black ones or not.

unlikely hacked but should be down the list of concerns. wanna saw oem hole looks like 2 overlapping round holes. usual mod is take enough to get a 6x9 in.

I ended up skipping on this 79 and found a 78 that I bought instead. Which is really what I wanted to start with.

I like the quad headlights on '79's but I think it's sentimental reasons because I had a quad headlight D150 in high school. I love the '78 front end too though. And didn't the '78 360 have better performance too?

Facts are stubborn things.

79 had emissions stuff but a lot of articles said there was no difference in performance. At this age I'm guessing it doesn't matter anyway especially when some of the emissions stuff either no longer works or has been tossed in the trash.

I like both years. I like the stacked headlight look but I also like the grille and lights of the 78 better. I like the newer hood better tho.

1979 had catalytic converters, more weight and exhaust restriction because of that.. You can make them as fast as you want I guess.. I have owned 3 1979, and one 1978.. The 1978 was faster but it could have been just the truck.
