Great old MLB Cardinal. One helluva pitcher & a great hitter as well. I'll never forget the Tigers vs. Cardinals 1968 World Series - Gibson was a pitcher & batter everyone feared. Curt Flood, Lou Brock, Gibson, what greats. Those are the main Cardinals that come to mind when I think back. And of course all our beloved Tigers - I still remember our starting lineup like they were family.

Bob - you will never be forgotten. https://www.cbsnews.com/live/video/20201003125320-baseball-hall-of-famer-bob-gibson-dead-at-84/

I was too young at the time, but as a lover of the Tigers, I've seen plenty of highlights. Bob was certainly intimidating. Al Kaline, Bill Freehan, Mickey Lolich, Norm Cash, Willie Horton and Denny McClain come to mind as Tiger greats from that team.

I could definitely spout off the entire 1984 Tigers lineup smile

I feel the same way about that Cardinals team, and the '68 World Series is the first one that I can remember watching. I was nine years old. All afternoon games then of course, and I remember beating it home from school for the last half.

I kind of miss the no-playoff format; win the league pennant, go to the WS. I can tolerate the LCS, but the divisionals and wild cards have gotten sort of ridiculous. The WS should be over by Columbus Day- does anyone really like Halloween baseball?

Gibson and McClain were unbelievable and as a young boy it broke my heart the tigers won the series over my beloved Cardinals. McClain might have been the last guy to win 30 games.

Denny was from Markham Illinois and had quite a difficult time after baseball.

I didn't intend to dogpile on Denny McLain - but since you bring him up. He somehow became a partner in a manufacturing company in Chesaning, MI. after his baseball days - the company employed quite a few people & they had a pension for all the retired & present employees - everybody paid into it. McLain & the other crooked people in charge cleverly pilfered all the funds & left zero in the account. The retired workers had nothing then. How's that for a real scoundrel? After hearing this story years ago, I could never respect McClain ever again. It takes a certain kind of bad to do something like that, & there ain't no cure.

That was also the first World Series I remember and first baseball season that I remember. I was a Giants' fan, but the Cardinals have always been second. In part because their pitching coach in 1968 was Billy Muffett. Billy's wife, Janet, was my dad's cousin. Billy was also the pitching coach on the 1984 Tigers.

I remember watching that 1968 season as Denny closed in on 30 wins, but I was rooting for the Cardinals. We had tvs in school (maybe new that year). They rolled them on carts into the cafeteria at lunch so we could watch the games.

Having been born in St. Louis and growing up in the midwest, it came naturally to be a Cardinals fan. And with players like Bob Gibson and Lou Brock, it was EASY to be a Cardinals fan. I loved watching those guys!

Hank Aaron on Bob Gibson
“(Hank Aaron told me) ‘Don’t dig in against Bob Gibson, he’ll knock you down. He’d knock down his own grandmother if she dared to challenge him. Don’t stare at him, don’t smile at him, don’t talk to him. He doesn’t like it. If you happen to hit a home run, don’t run too slow, don’t run too fast. If you happen to want to celebrate, get in the tunnel first. And if he hits you, don’t charge the mound, because he’s a Gold Glove boxer.’ I’m like, ‘Damn, what about my 17-game hitting streak?’ That was the night it ended.”

Tim McCarver the cards catcher said he was scared to go to the mound when Red told him to because Gibson would tell him he better not come out there because he don't know a damn thing about pitching and he would kick his ass.

Al Barlick was a hall of fame ump from Springfield and a drinking buddy of my grandfather he would go out to the mound and tell Gibson to quit trying to hit batters and Gibson said if he was trying to hit them he wouldn't miss. He was just protecting his part of the plate.

Saw him at a restaurant about 15 years ago, we both have the same name and our reservations were the same time. I showed him my drivers licence and told him about all the calls my we used to get in the summer from fans wanting to talk to Bob Gibson, my fathers name as well. Watched the series with Detroit from our 2nd grade desks and while I'm not much of a baseball fan I realize we lost two of the best to wear a uniform with 2 birds on a bat this past few weeks, RIP to the two of you and thanks

Koufax was great for 4 of his 12 seasons (the last four). Only six of his 12 seasons did he have a record above .500. Sub 3.00 ERA in only his last 5 seasons. There is not greatness in the whole of his career. I don't care how good he was for a few seasons, he doesn't belong in the conversation with many other pitchers, let alone Gibby and Marichal. Kershaw is considerably better than Koufax in a vastly different game. Jim Palmer was better. I could go on and could make a case that if Koufax is in the HOF (in my opinion his stats don't rise to that level), then Ron Guidry should be in (check the stats side by side). And, I've had this discussion with a former MLB pitcher (who is NOT nearly HOF worthy) and he agrees with my conclusion. 165 wins just doesn't make the cut for ANYBODY else...

As an honorary member of the St. Louis BBWAA annual dinner committee, I got to meet Bob on numerous occasions when we were honoring him at our dinner. Great guy and a fantastic pitcher. 1964 was my year of awakening to baseball. Watched Gibby beat the damn Yankees! 17 k's against the Tigers in Game 1 of the 1968 Series was otherworldly. Interesting Gibby story for you. One year at the dinner, my girlfriend Carrie and I were in the private cocktail party before the dinner. Carrie strikes up a conversation with Bob that lasted an hour. Afterwards, I asked her if she had any idea who she was talking to. Her reply, "Just a nice man named Bob". Bob had figured out real quick that Carrie had no idea who he was, and wanted nothing more from him than to have a heartfelt conversation, and I know that he enjoyed and appreciated it. A memory that I will cherish for a lifetime. RIP and Godspeed Bob!!

Gibson and other pitchers of that era believed they owned the inside part of the plate. The hitter owned the outside half. Today's premadonnas want to charge the mound on the first inside and high fast ball. Get off the plate if you don't like it. Pitchers saw guys crowding the plate, he backed them off, and they didn't cry and immediately charge the mound. The game has changed.

Anybody remember when Robin Ventura charged the mound on Nolan Ryan? LOL. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN16vqScM-g

Nolan took Ventura to school on that one. Not bad for an old guy.

As for the inside part of the plate, I saw an interesting interview with Reggie Jackson. He had trouble hitting the inside pitch his entire career and in the 1977 World Series he knew that the Dodgers' pitchers knew this, too. The game he hit three home runs he mad an adjustment by BACKING off the plate a couple of inches. The pitcher still threw to the inside, but...Reggie conceded the inside pitch, sort of...I've got a book around here that I never finished with interviews of both Gibson and Reggie talking respectively about hitting and pitching. Very interesting stuff.

Hitting major league pitching has got to be the hardest thing to do in professional sports. Be successful one-third of the time in any other, and you'll be shown the door. Do it in baseball and you're a star.

Uh, Koufax was easily among the all time best. It’s not even a discussion. He only had that few of wins because he was done at thirty. Reading this and knowing the list of things he accomplished makes it pure comedy to read. Good grief. Sandy Koufax not HOF worthy. Damn. Nobody is then. When you know what he did for those last years with a bum arm, it’s even more incredible.

I want my fair share
