Hello Guys.

Been a little while since I have been on the site, Nice to be Back!

Here is my scenario! I have a 71 Demon that I race in Super Street, - 10.90 index throttle stop. I have been running a 512 big block for the quite a while but unfortunately I had a recent incident that means I will require a different bullet in it for the next few seasons. Unfortunately, the Covid Virus has effected my occupation so in an effort to save every penny that I can I am going to put together a bunch of parts that I have laying around. I am also thinking that pump gas is the way I want to go. I am in Canada and the good guy price for race fuel is anywhere from $3.45 to $ 3.66 a litre. That works out to almost 14.00 per US gallon vs 4.75 per gallon for premium pump gas.

Here is the basic combination

451 CI - 400 block with 440 crank and 440 length Eagle Rods
JE forged Flat top pistons with valve reliefs. Guess would be 4 - 5 cc's. 990 pin, piston weight is 543 grams
Hoping that they are.004 in the hole.
I am still doing some math and hoping that finished compression will be between 10.75 to 11.00 to one. (I have to cc the heads and do more measuring to make sure we are accurate.)
Indy -1 Heads - 325 CNC Advertised at 78 cc but that needs to be confirmed
Harland Sharp 1.6 rockers
Indy 400 Dominator intake.
Either a Chuck Nutten 1050 Dominator or a Gary Stinnett 1050 Domintor
Powerglide with a 180 low gear, 4.56 rear gear, 32 x 14.5 W Hoosier Tire.

Here are the Cams that I have laying around:

All of the lift is based off a 1.5 rocker. I will be running a 1.6

CAM #1
Scott Brown Custom ROLLER cam - this was in my 512 - no damage to it. need a fresh set of lifters!!!!!!!

Advertised Lift INT .638 EXT .630
Duration @ .50 INT 272 EXT 280

Lobe Separation 112

CAM #2
Hughes HEV7680BS MECHANICAL Cam - need new lifters!

Advertised Lift INT .630 EXT .630
Duration @ .50 INT 277 EXT 280

Lobe Separation 108

CAM #3
OLD Crane MECHANICAL Cam - have lifters all in correct order and in great shape.

Advertised Lift INT .580 EXT .600
Duration @ .50 INT 268 EXT 278

Lobe Separation 108

Let me know your thoughts. As perviously mentioned I am planning on using the stuff that I have. NOT worried about ultimate ET. Want to get it back together so we can go and have some fun.

Thanks in advance.

My 2-cents:

Cam #2 with 277/280 duration at 0.050" is too much duration for the compression ratio you will have (less than 11).

So I vote for:
CAM #3
OLD Crane MECHANICAL Cam - have lifters all in correct order and in great shape.

Advertised Lift INT .580 EXT .600 [using 1.6 rockers will help increase this]
Duration @ .50 INT 268 EXT 278

Lobe Separation 108

Why not go with the roller (#1) then? work Those heads will breathe, you don't need all the duration. twocents

I agree with the old crane cam, and put it in at 104-106. 112 lobe sep closes intake later reducing cylinder pressure, same with the one having more intake duration (277*) my twocents

Had a Crane of the same spec in a 358" SB; I would think it would be pretty tame in a 500-incher.

Thanks Guys for the reply. I was thinking the same thing. I think with the lower compression that the Crane will be the best choice that I have. I think the 108 centreline will help get it moving off the starting line. The 1,6 rocker will also help a little bit with the relatively low lift. I know at this point I am leaving power on the table but unfortunately this is going to be a little FRANKENSTEIN motor made up of parts that have been sitting around, I am actually quite excited about seeing what it can do. And the reality is they don't give you a bonus at the track because your car ran in the nines!!!!!

Dwayne as always you are the voice of reason. I thought I would post on here to get some feedback and quit bugging you! My wife told me the other day that I had to stop bothering you with all my questions or you were going to stop answering your phone.

I have tried to sell the two mechanicals on multiple occasions with no success. The roller just came out so I have not tried to sell that one.

If you were putting a cam in this motor what would you do? If you want I can call you.

Thanks Dwayne.

Cams are inexpensive. And none of those seem ideal except the used cam.
I’d look into regrind The roller if they can tighten up the lsa a bit. I think they can a few degrees but not 100 on that.

i would run cam 1

if you want the CHEAPEST route, run cam 3

This is a bracket race car?? so if racing is more important than [performance right now, use the parts that will cost you the least and just dial the number it runs

....BAD A$$ STREET CAR.....
