What do the instructions on the can call for? I've seen both depending on paint type and vendor.

I blast parts, then spray down with brake kleen, let dry, then apply a coat of rattle can self-etching primer, wait about 20-30 minutes, then spray with your color coat. Works beautifully.

If blasting , i use a self etching primer. What i have found was , the rattle can did give me the final finish i like. Ended up scuffing and shot with a spray gun outside. Turned out really nice !! Rust-oleum !!
