I'm working on converting my '64 Dodge 880 to right hand thread wheel studs, so while I'm at it, I figured I would do this while I'm at it. Mopar Tapered Axle Rear Brake Conversion
Has anyone done this conversion? The car has 11" drums, and the parts stores say there's a difference between '69 down, and '70 on. I can't imagine what that difference would be. Is that a mistake? I have a set of '69 rear drums I got new several years ago that warped the first day I used them, and was going to try those just to see how they fit, but when buying new ones, if they only list '70 on, would that be the same thing? The wheel studs called out in the article are for a '70 Olds Delta 88. From what I've read, you want .006-.016" interference on serrated wheel studs. My hub measures .612", and these studs say they are .623", so that's right in the middle. I don't know how loose drums are supposed to be on the wheel studs. I always assumed the center hole located the drum on the axle shaft. I'm just wondering why they went through all the hassle of swedging the studs onto the hub and drum in the first place if it's not important how tight it is. Anyone have some insight on this?

Well, the drum I have is about .030" larger than the hub register. Feel way too sloppy to work. I'm wondering why the original drums can't be used with the new, unswedged studs? Was the idea of using the later drums just because they were cheaper, and there was nothing wrong with using the originals with the new wheel studs if the drum is still good? You're better off using the original drums since they will register properly on the hub, you may have to adjust the lug hole sizes depending on the diameter of the protruding shoulder on the lug stud. The later drums with the larger pilot hole could be used if the lugs are swedged and the off-center drums turned to make them true.

Your parts store is smoking something
Bendix lists the same 11" drum from 66-89. Dynamic Friction lists the same 11" drum from 65-89 Centric lists the same 11" drum from 65-89 NAPA lists the same 11" drum from 65-83 Interesting. When I look up Napa, they list Part #: ND 4401168, 11" X 2 1/2" Brakes, Dodge Charger 1970-1978, Coronet 1970-1976. The Raybestos website says 2953R, 11x2-1/2" rear drum, 1970 on. Now Rock Auto does something weird, but I find errors on their site all the time. Bendix PDR0365, 11" rear drum, shows Coronet 1970-1976, but Charger 1967-1978, Raybestos 2953R, 11x2-1/2" rear drum, Charger 1970-1978, Coronet 1970-1976, and Centric 12363016, 11" rear drum, Charger 1969-1978, Coronet 1966-1976.

That kind of goes against the point of doing the conversion, doesn't it? I see that article posted, and copied many places. Nobody noticed the later drums don't really fit? The key is having the studs that fit the drum stud holes tightly.
