It would be interesting to play in this end of the pool with the big kids.
I seem to recall Al Aguire having done the dance with one a couple years back , and there was a learning curve if my memory serves me.
But they certainly have unique and cool nailed down.
I don't know how they would respond to taming the cam and making them have more reliability and less of a valve spring diet.

Al’s was an old Pro Stock Hemi..... the one listed is the small block which IIRC was at the twilight of the pro stock truck class. They’re still running the small block style in Australia. There’s some bitchin dyno videos from Bob Book on you tube. Record setting combos smile

P-9 ?
Both ooze cool and exotic.
And if it has taken hold down under , then there has to be the insanity factor to consider.

R4/P5 hard to find the original parts as these are from the NHRA Pro Stock Truck days.

This engine could be run in NHRA Comp Eliminator or NHRA Super Stock in Modified, or with a single 850 or 750 carb Modified Stock.

Most of them seem to be 358 CI.

You can build one new with a Ritter block and Slawco heads.

Patterson-Elite maintains them for a Comp racer and an Super Stock racer as I have seen the engines (in crates) there.

Edit, just realized this is two engines, one with the drag race (Hemi heads) and one with what I call the NASCAR heads. Not sure if those were drag raced on the trucks or not. Maybe someone else knows the history better.

I didn't think the Ritter block fit the P5 heads?

I found MBE heads for $7900/pair, but god knows where you get a block....

Yep,, it is a shame this engine or parts are not readily available at a reasonable price. Maybe a short and tall deck versions, im sure this motor would give the competition a run for its money.

I would have built one before I got into BBM's, One of those at 440 cubes would be wicked.....I now have more invested in those than anything else.

They can be run in SS just as you see in that pic. In fact it was originally done at RWR before Rick closed as were all the Aussie Pro Stock stuff. Used to be tons of that stuff lying around there. Ryan worked on the stuff while at RWR always has said if we ever abandon the little chief this would be the replacement. The biggest issue with them is finding a block that holds water for classes like SS and Comp. You will hopefully see the B/A record broken again this year by Brandon Hutala with probably the best P5 engine out there. I believe he set it at 6.86 two years ago with that same engine. If you ran a class where a stock block is not a requirement them a billet is out there for them. But its a cube limited deal and if you wanna do that a 99/06 is easier to find parts for most definitely unless you just gotta run a SB

Whilst the Ritter block could probably be ordered with a blank deck and lifter valley, they are too tall a deck height for anyone to run them in Super Stock or Aussie Pro Stock, perhaps as a larger engine sure.

The early Wedge P5 heads were the first iteration of of the P5 head and never made it to Nascar. Tim Davis used them a bit years ago where "wedge" heads were allowed. The bowls on the cast heads were prone to cracking, hence why the billet ones are so popular.

As always, blocks are the issue. The R4 weren't consisitent, many of them have 8 sleeves and a decent grout fill.

Thanks for the clarifications.

I did find a post on Moparts from a guy that was telling everyone about latest, much better version, of the Ritter block. He said they were available for P5 heads. I have no way to verify that.

I do also understand that finding a good R4 block and having it last is a big problem.

What deck height would you want for a Super Stock or Australian Pro Stock block?

I have seen these in all 3 different configurations, P-5 small block, 99 hemi 4.90 bore space and 99'5.0 bore space. All the combos are very impressive and can work just fine with all the supporting parts. Guys complain about parts but there aren't actually too bad, especially in the 5.0 bore space. I've been running mine for years and have had next to nothing for part failures with rpm's close to 9,000. Lots of people call it the 'big dogs' and complain about price.... im selling mine complete from carbs to pan with all spare parts and a V300 racepak with all the data sensors for 43k....... How much you guys have into your street hemis?????? I personally believe guys are scared of them because they haven't had hands on experience running one. In reality they are a million times better then your second gen hemi. pushrod angles, piston weight, pushrod clearance, rocker arm off set and length, intake runner position etc etc, these things kick ass!.

Is that the one on RJ that has 648 cubes? If it is, I have been drooling over it for a month now. The evolution of the '99 platform looks like the future, but I know so little about them and see so few of them. Yours is a 5.0 bore space?

Yes that is mine, and thank you. After buying one, i don't know why people would waste there money on a second gen hemi for a racecar.... Now that being said, i have a second gen hemi in my streetcar, and it makes good power and does the job i want it too do. But after taking both apart, there are miles of innovation between them. Everyone says they don't want the maintenance as there sitting there baby sitting 47 nitrous bottles in there trailer.... I charge my battery, drain my puke tank, and fill the fuel between rounds. End of the day i do valve lash and check springs. when a spring does go soft, I've changed one out in 17 mins with all LSM tools bought over the counter. Also after buying one, i would have the 5.0 bore space deal forsure... smaller cubes means you have to rev it higher and that's where you get into some maintenance.

As short as possible...... I would be surprised to see them over 9 inch.

Not all that long ago there were 4 cylinder blocks on clearance for use with p5 head. If I recall correctly, they were less than $1000. Almost bought one, but that is one more project that I don’t need. At the time you could still get the raw cast version of the p5 head. Crank forgings for the 4 cylinder were also available. I would think a billet crank would be more what you would want though.
Didn’t “blofish” use a 4 cylinder p5 for a land speed record? It may have been a p7 headed 4. Don’t recall for sure.
